Manuel Dejesus, also known as Manuel Martir, 34, was arrested by police last month, hours after an attack Jan. 16 in Garfield Park at 26th and Harrison streets in the Mission District, in which the teenage girl was sexually assaulted at knifepoint before escaping. He has pleaded not guilty.

At the time, authorities were investigating a Dec. 21 attack on a 46-year-old woman who had been picked up in the Mission, driven to the 1200 block of Vermont Street, beaten, raped, slashed with a broken beer bottle and dumped on the sidewalk.

Investigators identified Dejesus as a suspect because his car, found parked near the scene of the attack, had been linked to the rapist. As they prepared an arrest warrant, they discovered that Dejesus was already in jail under the name of Martir for the Garfield Park attack.

Dejesus was charged with attempted murder, rape, sodomy and false imprisonment in the Dec. 21 attack. He was arraigned Tuesday, pleaded not guilty and was held on $1 million bail.

Authorities say Dejesus, a Salvadoran national who is a day laborer in the Cesar Chavez Street area, has had a federal immigration hold placed on him.

He was on probation at the time of the attack for a residential burglary that occurred March 31, 2008, in the Mission. He was released in July 2008 and was deported, records show.

Local authorities believe he returned to the United States illegally. His attorney could not be reached for comment.
