N.C. - Myrick will push again for bill involving illegal immigrants and drunk dr Wednesday, November 26 @ 11:01:51 EST by alipac (1643 reads) | CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - An On Your side investigation exposed just how bad the problem of illegal immigrants getting DWIs is here in Mecklenburg County.
Our analysis found one out of every four people arrested for D-W-I on weekends this month is a suspected illegal immigrant. This is not a new issue. Congresswoman Sue Myrick has been trying to make D-W-I a deportable offense since 2005.
"It's just frustrating as the Dickens that we can't get something done to stop it," she told WBTV.

Myrick: Gaston County an option for immigration detention and deportation center Saturday, January 12 @ 09:49:01 EST by alipac (2654 reads) | Myrick: Gaston County an option for immigration detention and deportation center By Kevin Ellis January 11, 2008 - 8:29PM
Federal officials have begun talking to Gaston County leaders about the possibility of locating a detention and deportation facility here.
The facility would house illegal immigrants awaiting deportation.
So far, the talk has not moved beyond phone calls and discussions to gauge the county’s interest.
“Certainly, we’re open at looking at this,” Gaston County Manager Jan Winters said Friday.
Conversations started in mid-December and apparently involve U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick and officials with the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
A 1,500-bed detention and deportation facility had been announced to open in Mecklenburg County, but those talks have ended, according to Myrick.

North Carolina - Citizenship checks sought Wednesday, August 29 @ 15:17:53 EDT by Jean (3255 reads) | U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick and Mecklenburg County Sheriff Jim Pendergraph called Tuesday for North Carolina to begin determining the citizenship of all inmates entering the prison system. Myrick said the program would resemble the current illegal-immigrant screening at Mecklenburg's jail, where about 2,600 illegal immigrants have been identified since May 2006.
Myrick and Pendergraph want state prisons to check inmates' citizenship during their initial screening, when prison officials fingerprint and photograph them.
Once the inmates have served their sentences, those already marked as illegal immigrants would be turned over to federal authorities and deported, rather than returning to N.C. communities, Myrick said.

N.C. leader joins push to halt Bank of America program Monday, March 19 @ 18:20:06 EDT by admin (3366 reads) | Tampa Bay's second largest bank has gained a hometown foe to plans that could lead it to do business with illegal aliens.
U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick is joining the fight to shut down Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America Corp.'s program to give credit cards to customers without Social Security numbers -- in more ways than one.
The seven-term Charlotte congresswoman is co-sponsoring legislation that would kill the controversial credit-card offer and she also is pulling her banking business from BofA (NYSE: BAC), one of her biggest political donors.
"I have been with them for a long time, but this was just the straw that breaks the camel's back in my mind," said Myrick, who said she is in the process of moving her accounts to Wachovia Corp. because the BofA program launched in Los Angeles is likely to be rolled out nationally. "If I believe something, I'm going to stand by my principles. I'm not going to be a hypocrite and have my banking there and feel the way I do."
The bank switch has Tampa Bay applications, where, like in Charlotte, the two banks are major rivals.

Restaurant Tests Myrick on Immigration Sunday, December 17 @ 18:12:40 EST by JimP (3469 reads) | Illegal workers at
stepson's restaurant?
FRANCO ORDOÑEZ
Rep. Sue Myrick
U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick sailed into a seventh term in Congress last month
on a campaign that emphasized one issue: fighting illegal immigration.
To celebrate, the Charlotte Republican went to Blue Restaurant
& Bar, said her stepson, who owns the uptown restaurant known for
its Mediterranean cuisine.
Her visits often stir talk in the kitchen among the roughly 20
Hispanic employees, said one worker. He said he believes Myrick's
aggressive stance against illegal immigrants like him is what propelled
her back into Congress.
"She's famous," he said. "We all know who she is. They say she won because of the Latinos."
The prospect of illegal immigrants working at her stepson's
restaurants has Myrick's critics questioning whether she is as vigilant
against illegal immigration privately as she is publicly. Myrick, 65,
has proposed legislation to increase fines against companies that
knowingly employ illegal immigrants and has hosted classes teaching
employers how to verify workers' status.
