Chances are dim, but advocates will still push for immigration reform Amnesty Monday, February 01 @ 11:21:56 EST by williamg (883 reads) | As President Obama vows to refocus Democrats'
attention on jobs and the economy, advocates for overhauling the
nation's immigration laws say they are still gearing up for a battle in
the Senate in coming weeks, despite fading hopes for victory.
Washington's drawn-out health-care debate badly damaged prospects
for an immigration bill this winter. It ate up weeks of the Senate's
time, sapped progressive lawmakers' energy and, most recently, stoked a
populist backlash that cost Democrats the seat of the late Sen. Edward
M. Kennedy (Mass.), the chamber's most prominent champion of liberal
health-care and immigration policies.

Congress takes aim at blocking illegals from accessing in-state college tuition Friday, January 29 @ 00:23:02 EST by jean (555 reads) | A new development has taken place in the ongoing battle to stop illegal immigrants from receiving taxpayer-subsidized college tuition.
This week a bill was introduced by U.S. Congressman Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.) and U.S.Congressman Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.) called the Fairness for American Students Act that would close a loophole in current law that several states have used to provide lower-cost college tuition to illegal immigrants compared to tuition rates U.S. citizens from neighboring states have to pay. Kansas and Nebraska are two of the states that currently offer in-state tuition to illegal immigrants.

Mass. immigration reforms in peril after Scott Brown win Saturday, January 23 @ 15:36:43 EST by williamg (1125 reads) | BOSTON — For months, immigrant advocacy groups
like the Chelsea Collaborative and Berkshire Immigrant Center have been
gearing up to push lawmakers on state and federal immigration reforms.
They’ve held statewide forums, marched in Washington, D.C., and
organized rallies with hopes of seeing the major immigration overhaul
promised by Gov. Deval Patrick and President Barack Obama.
But after the historic election victory of Republican Scott Brown
to the U.S. Senate, those illusions may be evaporating. Political
observers say Brown, who ran on a platform opposing some of those
reforms, has emboldened conservative voters, and they will likely table
reforms in the near future.

Health bills fail to block illegals from coverage Monday, November 30 @ 01:28:12 EST by jean (871 reads) | Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants could receive health care coverage from their employers under the bills winding their way through Congress, despite President Obama's explicit pledge that illegal immigrants would not benefit.
The House bill mandates, and the Senate bill strongly encourages, businesses to extend health care coverage to all employees. But the bills do not have exemptions to screen out illegal immigrants, who usually obtain jobs by using false identities and are indistinguishable from legal workers.

Immigration Distrust on Health Bill Friday, September 11 @ 12:57:56 EDT by alipac (1296 reads) | Nothing illustrates America's distrust of
Congress quite like the illegal immigrant provision of the House health
care bill, HR 3200.
President Obama made it the first item in his last radio address:
"I want to spend a few minutes debunking some of the more
outrageous myths circulating on the Internet, on cable TV, and repeated
at some town halls across this country.
"Let's start with the false claim that illegal immigrants will get
health insurance under reform. That's not true. Illegal immigrants

Illegal Immigration Issue A Top Concern At Town Hall Meetings! Monday, September 07 @ 12:07:37 EDT by admin (1328 reads) | Town hall crowd vents wide-ranging anger at Rep. Spratt
ROCK HILL - A hostile crowd greeted U.S. Rep.
John Spratt in his home county Thursday night, filling a 700-seat hall
to voice anger over far more than health-care reform.
Many in the Rock Hill audience lashed out at illegal immigration,
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a federal government they say no longer
deserves the trust of Americans.
Outside, an overflow crowd of 200 listened on portable speakers.
The loudest applause inside a packed Baxter Hood Center might have
come when a Fort Mill man denounced Pelosi for one criticism of
opponents of Democratic reform efforts.
