Supreme Court seeks White House views on hiring illegal immigrants Monday, November 02 @ 19:19:14 EST by Dixie (390 reads) | WASHINGTON — The Obama administration will enter the politically tricky immigration arena, courtesy of the Supreme Court .
On Monday, the court asked the administration for its views in a
challenge to an Arizona law that punishes companies for hiring illegal
aliens. Other states with large immigrant populations will watch the
next steps closely, because their own laws and ballot measures could be
on the line.
"This case involves a question of exceptional
national importance: whether state legislatures and municipal
governments may override Congress' judgment concerning United States
immigration policy," attorney Carter Phillips wrote in a legal brief.

Immigrants have come to South Carolina in large numbers in a search for jobs. They found the state attractive not only for the chance to work, but also because they felt the odds were better than in border states for escaping detection by immigration authorities.

Sheriff's deputies may turn illegal immigrants over to BP, Gore says Saturday, July 25 @ 15:48:34 EDT by alipac (659 reads) | Sheriff's deputies may turn illegal immigrants over to BP, Gore says
By EDWARD SIFUENTES - Saturday, July 25, 2009 12:03 AM PDT ∞
Newly appointed San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore says he will continue a long-standing department policy that allows his deputies to detain a suspected illegal immigrant for up to an hour while they wait for the Border Patrol.
Because deputies do not have the authority to enforce immigration laws, detaining a person for more than an hour could be considered an illegal arrest, he said. That is why the department has the one-hour rule, Gore said.
"How long you detain them becomes a legal issue," Gore said. "When does a detention become an arrest? Our lawyers who have looked at this say you're probably safe if you keep it under an hour."

AZ - Immigration enforcement bill clears early hurdle Wednesday, June 10 @ 02:10:13 EDT by alipac (764 reads) | A proposal that would draw local police officers deeper into the fight against illegal immigration cleared its first hurdle Tuesday at the Arizona Legislature.
The bill would criminalize the presence of illegal immigrants in the state by expanding Arizona's trespassing law to let local authorities arrest those who sneak into the country. It also would prohibit cities from restricting the flow of information on a person's immigration status and allow people to sue local officials who limit their police officers' ability to fully enforce federal immigration law.
