Haitians come out of shadow to seek temporary protected status Tuesday, January 26 @ 15:54:24 EST by williamg (416 reads) | The undocumented Haitians who have been keeping
a low profile in South Florida are hearing the whispers that they can
live in the United States legally for as long as 18 months. Some wonder
if it's only a rumor. Others believe it's too good to be true. And then
there are some, like Rauel Charles, already with application in hand,
searching for someone to help him.
"I'm illegal, I'm not working," said Charles, 45, of West Palm
Beach. "Right now I don't have money to send for my family in Haiti.
But I will get employment. Then I will send money. Now I am very, very
happy."

* Worst episode of Italian racial unrest in years
* Opposition accuses govt of fuelling xenophobia
* Southern town still tense, more immigrants wounded Friday
By Ilario Filippone
ROSARNO, Italy, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Clashes between immigrants and locals
in a southern Italian town entered a second day on Friday, with the
government rushing extra police to try to stem one of the worst
episodes of racial unrest in years.
The violence inflamed a long-running political debate on
immigration, with the interior minister saying years of excessive
"tolerance" were behind the violence, and the opposition accusing the
government of fuelling xenophobia.
President Giorgio Napolitano called for an immediate end to the unrest, during which at least 37 people, including 18 policemen, have been injured.

Brittish Official Admits Mass Immigration Political Conspiracy Sunday, October 25 @ 14:15:27 EDT by admin (1034 reads) | Labour let in migrants 'to engineer multicultural UK'
By Daily Mail Reporter
24th October 2009
Huge increases in immigration over the past decade were a deliberate
attempt to engineer a more multicultural Britain, a former Government
adviser said yesterday.
Andrew Neather, a speechwriter who worked in Downing Street for Tony
Blair and in the Home Office for Jack Straw and David Blunkett, said
Labour's relaxation of controls was a plan to 'open up the UK to mass
migration'.
As well as bringing in hundreds of thousands to plug labour market
gaps, there was also a 'driving political purpose' behind immigration
policy, he claimed.

Border patrol sees sharp rise in number of Chinese caught in desert Tuesday, October 06 @ 12:58:03 EDT by alipac (840 reads) | NOGALES, Ariz. — Amid an overall drop in arrests
of illegal immigrants crossing the U.S-Mexico border, an intriguing
anomaly has cast a new light on human smuggling: Authorities report an
almost tenfold spike in the number of Chinese people caught in the
Arizona desert, the busiest smuggling corridor on the international
line.
The Border Patrol in the Tucson sector has arrested at least 261
Chinese border-crossers this year, compared with an annual average of
32 during the last four years, officials said.
"They are the main (non-Mexicans) we catch," said field operations
supervisor Juventino Pacheco of the patrol's international liaison unit
in Nogales. "Lately we have been catching more Chinese than Central
Americans."

Historic Swing Right In Europe over Illegal Immigraiton and Economy Tuesday, June 09 @ 11:57:00 EDT by admin (1082 reads) | Europe swings Right as depression deepens
The establisment Left had been crushed across most of Europe, just as it was in the early 1930s.
We have seen the ultimate crisis of capitalism -- what
Marxist-historian Eric Hobsbawm calls the "dramatic equivalent of the
collapse of the Soviet Union" -- yet socialists have completely failed
to reap any gain from the seeming vindication of their views.
It is not clear why a chunk of the blue-collar working base has
swung almost overnight from Left to Right, but clearly we are seeing
the delayed detonation of two political time-bombs: rising unemployment
and the growth of immigrant enclaves that resist assimilation.

Immigrants' remittances drop for the first time Wednesday, January 28 @ 12:56:15 EST by alipac (1590 reads) | Mexicans' cash sent home drying up along with work
Freddy Arroyo returned to his home in the village of La Parota, Michoacán, two weeks ago, penniless.
The Mexico native spent months scrapping for work at Houston’s day labor sites, trying to save money to send back to his wife, who was nearly nine months pregnant when he left home.
He stuck it out in Houston after his daughter was born last spring, hoping to find work painting houses, but gave up this month and headed home.
“He came back because there was no work,” said Catalina Orozco, Arroyo’s wife.

Hispanic fertility drives U.S. population growth Tuesday, August 19 @ 09:13:24 EDT by admin (13792 reads) | WASHINGTON - If it weren't for Hispanic births, the U.S. could be
confronting long-term population declines similar to those in Germany,
Japan and other industrialized countries.
Hispanics are the only ethnic group now producing more than two
children per family, according to a Census Bureau report released
Monday. That's the number necessary to replace the mother and father
and keep the population stable.
"The Hispanic population is growing; whites and Asians are not
replacing themselves," said Jane Dye, the Census Bureau demographer who
wrote the study.
The average U.S. woman produces 1.9 children, but broken down by
ethnicity, the numbers are 1.7 for Asian Americans, 1.8 for
non-Hispanic whites, 2.0 for blacks and 2.3 for Hispanics. American
Indians and Native Americans weren't included in the report. The
fertility rates are sufficient, combined with immigration, to keep the
U.S. population growing.

Italy Deploys Troops to Fight Illegal Immigration Crime Wave! Monday, August 04 @ 09:05:04 EDT by admin (2022 reads) | Italy: Silvio Berlusconi puts troops on patrol in Rome
John Hooper in Rome The Guardian, Monday August 4 2008
Tourists arriving in Rome today may be startled to find the main railway station and the underground guarded by troops.
Some 3,000 soldiers are being deployed this morning as part of a
package of measures introduced by Silvio Berlusconi's government to
fulfil an electoral pledge to uphold law and order.
The government has repeatedly linked rising crime rates to illegal
immigration, which last month prompted Berlusconi and his ministers to
declare a national state of emergency.
The deployment of the military is the latest high-profile element
in a campaign that already includes the fingerprinting of those of who
live in camps on the outskirts of Italy's big cities, the vast majority
of them Roma. The troops are expected to remain on the streets until at
least the end of January.

High court eases rules for those who overstay visas Tuesday, June 17 @ 15:12:28 EDT by alipac (2362 reads) | WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court made it easier today for some foreigners who overstay their visas to seek to remain in the United States legally.
The court ruled 5-4 that someone who is here illegally may withdraw his voluntary agreement to depart and continue to try to get approval to remain in the United States.
The decision essentially embraced a proposed Justice Department regulation governing the treatment of similar cases in the future.
Samson Dada, a Nigerian citizen, stayed beyond the expiration of his tourist visa in 1998. He married an American the following year and soon began trying to obtain a visa as an immediate relative of a citizen. But Dada and his wife apparently failed to submit some documents, causing immigration officials to deny the visa.

Italy Cracks Down on Illegal Alien Crime Wave! Tuesday, April 22 @ 10:12:39 EDT by admin (2276 reads) | Anti-(illegal) immigrant party to win key Italy cabinet posts
By Phil Stewart
ROME (Reuters) - Italy's
anti-immigrant Northern League party says it will take key posts in
prime minister-elect Silvio Berlusconi's cabinet, positioning it to
advance a crackdown on foreign illegals it blames for violent crime.
The head of the Northern League, which surprised pundits by
grabbing 8 percent of the vote in last week's polls, said in comments
published on Monday that its cabinet posts will include interior
minister, reforms minister and agriculture minister.
Berlusconi said on Monday his cabinet list was not yet finalized,
and warned there would be some surprises. The cabinet will have to be
approved by President Giorgio Napolitano.
Northern League leader Umberto Bossi
said the post of deputy prime minister would go to League member
Roberto Calderoli, who has outraged Muslims with past antics such as
wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with Danish cartoons showing the Prophet
Mohammad.
He also promoted a "pig day" protest in a Muslim community last
year, threatening to walk a pet pig where a new mosque was going to be
built. Muslims do not eat pork and consider pigs and their meat too
filthy to touch.
