Smugglers intrude on Arizona reservation Thursday, March 18 @ 01:29:01 EDT by jean (291 reads) | TOHONO O'ODHAM INDIAN RESERVATION, Ariz. — The southern border of this sprawling desert tribal land is fenced in by 75 miles of steel and cable, erected to keep out drug runners, cartel operatives and bandidos that wander up from Mexico.
Keeping the bad element off the reservation is often like trying to hold water with an open hand, says Sgt. Vincent Garcia of the Tohono O'odham Nation Police Department.

Critics Blast App to Aid Illegal Immigrants Thursday, March 11 @ 00:23:15 EST by jean (415 reads) | A cell phone application that will help illegal immigrants find water and key landmarks as they cross into the United States is an inappropriate use of taxpayer funds and an irresponsible use of technology, critics say.
The Transborder Immigrant Tool (TBT), the brainchild of three faculty members at the University of California-San Diego and a colleague at the University of Michigan, is a software application that can be installed into a GPS-enabled cell phone. In addition to helping immigrants locate water and landmarks, it also could alert them to Border Patrol checkpoints. And to make the trek a little less arduous, it also plays recorded poetry.

Mexico says immigration reform unlikely in 2010 Saturday, January 09 @ 00:36:56 EST by jean (875 reads) | MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexico's ambassador to the United States said Friday he expects immigration reform is unlikely to pass in that country in 2010 because of unemployment and midterm elections.

A Mexican Poll, Troubling Implications for U.S. Immigration Policy Tuesday, December 08 @ 13:14:54 EST by Dixie (636 reads) | The topic of immigration is a controversial one
in the United States, but not in Mexico. In Mexico, pretty nearly
everybody agrees that the borders should be open for Mexicans to enter
the U.S. at will. Not only that, but even if Mexicans go to the U.S.
and become American citizens, they, and even their descendants are
still considered Mexicans. This raises a number of complications for
U.S. citizenship and national identity.
I resided in Mexico for a decade and a half and found it to be an
eye-opening experience. Americans tend to have a romantic view of
immigration based upon the Ellis Island days of a century past.
Mexicans however, view emigration to the United States very
differently. They don’t generally consider that they are ceasing to be
Mexicans when they become American citizens.
