EL PASO, Texas -- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE, announced Thursday the arrests of 1,785 suspected gang members and associates across the country in 89 cities, including El Paso and Las Cruces.

Of those arrested, 17 were living in El Paso, four were living in Las Cruces and the rest were living either in West Texas or New Mexico. "A lot of these gang members are individuals who have been convicted of serious crimes," said Leticia Zamarripa, a spokesperson for ICE. "Kidnapping, assault, some of them even murder homicide charges."
The six-month operation targeted "transnational street gangs," which according to ICE investigators, have significant numbers of foreign-born members and are frequently involved in human smuggling and trafficking in narcotics.
Not only are many of those arrested no longer out on the streets, many are out of the country.
"They were in the country illegally, or they legally entered the country, but have been convicted of serious crimes," said Zamarripa. "So they were deportable."
Of the 62 arrested in the El Paso region, 17 were criminally charged and 33 were taken into custody on alleged immigration violations.
