Protesters gathered along Dixie Hwy. in
Waterford Twp. for a tea party Saturday afternoon protesting amnesty
and illegal immigration. The Oakland Press/DOUG BAUMAN
Diane Chrzanowski of White Lake Township stood among her fellow
protesters, wearing a red and white T-shirt with a bald eagle on it.
She was one of the local organizers behind a local Tea party
protest against illegal immigration legislation that would give amnesty
to undocumented residents.

“I'm passionate about it because it's against
the law of the United States,” she said, standing next to about 65
people, some carrying signs. “They want to start pushing amnesty.”
The Waterford protest was Saturday in the Kmart parking lot at 5100
Dixie Highway. A second event was held in downtown Detroit at Harry's
Detroit Bar and Restaurant.
These protests were apart of similar events being held in 50 cities in 26 states.
Nationally, the effort was sponsored by the political action committee Americans for Legal Immigration.
Individuals carried signs with slogans like read, “build the fence,” and “lies, lies, lies.”
This was also coming on the heals of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano's request for immigration reform legislation
President Barack Obama had also made a campaign promise for a “tough but fair” plan to legalization.
Chrzanowski, like several others, criticized what they felt is the
government pushing a healthcare system that will provide illegal
citizens with services once they are given amnesty.
Among them was Commissioner Jim Runestad, R-Waterford Township.
Runestad said state officials should pass two state bills that would require state contractors and subcontractors use E-Verify.
The system would require employers to electronically verify their employees' citizenship status.
Runestad said illegal citizens are only adding the state's 15
percent of unemployment problems, taking jobs that could go to legal
citizens.
“It's fast, it's free,” he said. “It just basically takes a person's name and social security number.”
Not far from Runestad was Gary Kahn of Redford, holding an American flag.
Kahn illegal residents are swamping the health care system and depriving actual Americans of the country's resources.
“Why do all of these communists have the ear of the president,” he said.
“They are trying to shred the constitution and there is not much I can do but at least I can stand up and be counted.”
