Detectives say the suspects invaded the family's upscale Winter Garden home on Sunday. They blindfolded Rubens Morais, Marcela Borges and their 5-year-old son and drove them to Apopka where the victims were forced to spend the night.
The following day, authorities say the suspects drove the victims back to their home where they were bound with duct tape and held at gunpoint.
Borges was forced to drive the suspects to a Bank of America branch where $23,600 was withdrawn from the family’s account.
The next day, police say, Borges was able to remove one of the suspect’s masks during an altercation, revealing a young female. According to the charging affidavit, the female suspect screamed, “She saw my face and knows who I am. You have to kill her!”
Marcela was able to loosen her binding and jumped from a second story window. As she ran to a neighbor's house, she was shot through the left side of her back. The exiting bullet also shattered her left wrist.
Two of the suspects then took the family’s black Audi SUV and fled. The vehicle later was found ditched not far from the home.
The two other suspects fled on foot. 25-year-old Miguel Diaz Santiz and 20-year-old Victor Sanchez Santiz, who are cousins, were eventually captured and confessed to the crime.
The third male suspect was arrested in Apopka. The fourth suspect, a female, is still on the loose.
Orlando station WFTV reports that the three male suspects are in the country illegally.
Police confirmed the husband is in the trucking business. Investigators are looking into whether the suspects worked for him at some point and believe they knew the victims.
Borges was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center where she underwent surgery. She is expected to recover.
