Luis Martinez Villi Gomez, whose attorney said he was not a legal resident of the United States, was sentenced to one to two years in prison and must register as a sex offender for 30 years, said Beth Lari, assistant district attorney.

Gomez, 40, was originally charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child and felony sexual child abuse.

According to previous reports by The Star , he lived in Shelby and was arrested in March after being accused of sexually abusing a girl over the course of three months.

The charges span from Dec. 26, 2011 to March 21 of this year, according to arrest warrants.

Lari said Gomez has one previous conviction in district court in 2010, when he was convicted of misdemeanor secret peeping involving a child younger than 12. She said the district court judge did not require Gomez to register as a sex offender.

Gomez did not receive an active sentence for the 2010 conviction but was given probation, according to the N.C. Department of Correction.

Lari said whether Gomez remains in the country is up to federal officials.
