GET READY FOR THIS COMING WEEK OF ANOTHER BATTLE IN THE SENATE

NEWS FLASH: Today in the Utah GOP Convention, Rep. Chris Cannon (R-UT) -- one of the loudest champions of amnesty in the U.S. House -- was forced into a public primary after coming in second in voting! This is yet another in a string of recent local victories, showing that our stance is muscling up through the electorate. (Read more below.)

    DEAR SUPPORTERS OF REDUCED IMMIGRATION,

Please pay close attention to your email in-boxes starting Monday for urgent requests from us for you to take various actions, such as sending new free faxes to Congress.

Starting Monday, Pres. Bush and Senate leaders of both parties are going to throw every effort they have in them to push through the giant amnesty and immigration increase that they failed to get through just before Easter.

For the 10,000 or so Americans who have joined us since Easter, let me explain that during these big battles in Congress, the NumbersUSA Capitol Hill Team makes it possible for us to update you once a day and sometimes several times a day so you can exercise as much influence as possible on Congress from the comfort of your computer station.

I'm not aware of anybody on Capitol Hill who disagrees that the main reason the amnesty did not pass before Easter was the incredible outpouring of opposition from citizens like you during those two weeks.

I am sure that the Senate leaders and Pres. Bush are making this desperate additional attempt because they are hoping that all of you are still worn out from last month's activism.

On Monday, let's give them everything we've got and shock them out of their self-deception!

    1. What SENATE LEADERS have planned

Senate Majority Leader Frist (R-TN) and Minority Leader Reid (D-NV) have come to an agreement that they say will ensure that the gargantuan increase in immigration will pass the Senate before Memorial Day.

They are claiming that they have 70 of the 100 Senators (far more than the 60 necessary) to ram through the amnesty bill.

But they claimed they had enough votes before Easter but failed then.

Nonetheless, it is extremely troubling to see the Senate leaders of both Parties falling all over themselves to thumb their noses at the majority of the American people. What they are doing makes so little political sense that it is difficult to know what they think they are doing.

The bill they are pushing would:
offer citizenship to most of some 12 million illegal aliens

at a minimum double legal immigration from 1 to 2 million a year

open a foreign guestworker program of 400,000 a year at first but increasing by 20% every year

    2. What PRES. BUSH has planned

The President is asking for network Prime Time to address the nation Monday night on immigration.

There can be no doubt that it is timed to try to help the amnesty get through the Senate.

Nonetheless, our White House sources tell us that they don't think Bush in his address will push the amnesty (or legalization) but will focus on enforcement measures.

This would likely be the same sleight of hand that Bush has used for years. He talks about enforcement as a way to build more momentum for massive importation of foreign workers through many means. After a few years of saying that he is absolutely against giving illegal aliens a path to citizenship, Bush is now widely reported to be backing the Frist/Reid amnesty that does just that.

Our sources inside the Department of Homeland Security and the Senate tell us that none of the increases in enforcement funding just voted or the promises of increased enforcement by the Administration are intended to make a difference in actually slowing the flow of illegal workers into U.S. job markets. The moves apparently are all window-dressing to help wavering Senators believe that it is now safe to vote for an amnesty and massive increases in legal immigration.

Some of your NumbersUSA staff just returned in the last week from several days on the Arizona/Mexico border. They witnessed major movements of illegal aliens and drug supplies as a routine occurrence and without U.S. government interference. In talking with U.S. border officers and Native Americans who protect their reservation from foreign intervention, our staff concluded that this Administration is leaving the border just as open and vulnerable today as before the 9/11 attacks. in this email:

    3. Our Congressional Allies Working Overtime to Thwart Frist - Reid - Bush - McCain - Kennedy - Hagel - Martinez

Like most of the battles that we ask you to engage, this one will be uphill.

But we have a host of allies in Members of Congress who are working overtime to strategize and prepare for the battle. Rest assured that your NumbersUSA Capitol Hill Team is in the middle of most of these strategic sessions. We will prompt you at each step of the fight as each new action is needed.

Obviously, we can't give you the plan because there would be no way to do that without risking tipping off the open-borders opposition. But the requests we make of you will be guided by that plan.

One of the brightest spots has been the firmness of our allies in the House to say to the President and the Senate that they are not budging on their insistence for the enforcement-only H.R. 4437 they passed in December.

After we and other immigration-reduction groups heavily promoted the recent Zogby poll showing overwhelming public support for the House bill over the Senate amnesties, we were ecstatic to see a letter go out to all House Republicans touting the poll as a reason not to give in. The letter was sent by Rep. Sensenbrenner (R-WI and chair of Judiciary), Rep. Peter King (R-NY and chair of Homeland Security) and Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO). The latter was especially a powerful sign because of his service in the middle of the House GOP leadership.

Be sure to review the results of that Zogby poll before you start calling Senate offices Monday. It will give you a supreme sense of self-confidence. Find it at:

    4. VOTERS ARE GIVING OPEN-BORDERS FOLKS A LOT OF GRIEF -- Cannon story

Rep. Cannon's problems today are similar to what we are saying in many locales across the country. Voters are starting to make a real difference.

A couple of years ago, Cannon was bragging that he was the White House point man in the House for Bush's efforts for a guestworker/amnesty program.

He appeared at the National Council of La Raza to receive an award for his championing of illegal aliens and he was widely quoted in national media giving the reasons why illegal aliens are good for America.

Two years ago, Matt Throckmorton kept Cannon from getting the 60% of GOP convention votes necessary to go on the ballot in the fall. That is almost unheard of for an incumbent Congressman, but Cannon's immigration positions gave Throckmorton a good handle to turn. Cannon went on to win the primary but with only 58% of the Republican voters supporting him.

Ever since then, Cannon has been a little more careful and has voted pretty well on enforcement issues while continuing to push for amnesties and massive guestworker programs.

Political newcomer John Jacob (a wealthy land developer) mounted a strong challenge to Cannon based on his support for amnesty and not only denied Cannon his 60% but actually beat him 52-48.

That means the Republican voters of Utah's 3rd Congressional District will get a chance to cast a clear immigration vote a month from now, deciding whether Cannon or Jacob will be the Republican nominee on the November ballot.

This is a huge development, especially since the Wall Street Journal and Grover Norquist have been claiming for a couple of years that Cannon's victory in '04 was proof that our immigration-reduction message just can't win at the polls.

Jacob needs to be better still on immigration. All of you in Utah need to really press him to become a clearer champion of our issues. To send him an immigration survey, click here.

We had another victory at the polls in the last week in Nebraska.

Congressman Tom Osborne lost his primary attempt to run for governor. As a long-time hero football coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, with huge margins of victory in the past and with an endorsement by Sen. McCain just before the primary, Osborne had looked like a sure thing.

But he lost. And even he said that one of the main reasons for his loss was his support for in-state tuition for illegal aliens. His opponent stood firm against providing incentives for illegal aliens.

Osborne was a lackluster Member of Congress on our issues, with a B-minus. He wasn't that bad. But Nebraska voters made it clear that they prefer somebody a little more excited about protecting them from out-of-control immigration.

BTW, McCain spoke at the Utah convention before the vote on Cannon. McCain did his usual plea for a massive guestworker program (which, for him, includes citizenship for illegal aliens and future guestworkers). Cannon has been one of the most enthusiastic supporters in the House for solutions like the ones offered by McCain.

If McCain had an effect on the delegates, it was to remind them why they didn't like Cannon.

The Herndon, Virginia City Council was overturned by the voters over immigration.

The decision by the Herdon City Council to use public funds to set up a center for mostly illegal-alien day laborers created a controversy that got national attention.

But when the mayor and city council members came up for re-election, the voters through out all but one of the incumbents seeking re-election. The mayor is gone. The new mayor and five of the six council members was elected on a platform of opposing providing incentives to illegal aliens.

    5. Don't wait for an Alert from me to check our website for updates and actions to take

We have gotten a lot of phone calls, letters and emails the last two or three weeks complaining that we haven't sent out enough Alerts recently and that we aren't doing anything.

In fact, we have posted many actions to take on your corkboards the last few weeks. We often send an automatic Alert that goes with the new action. But I've not sent my own personal Action Alert messages to you very often since Easter.

We can't guarantee delivery of all of our Alerts.

That is why it is so important that you create a routine by which you go to NumbersUSA regularly -- at least a couple of times a week -- to see what you might be missing.

Senators and House leaders are asking us at NumbersUSA to bring an army to bear on their wayward colleagues this coming week.

They see no way to win without the concerted effort of all of you.

THEY ARE COUNTING ON YOU -- AND SO AM I,

    -- ROY

    Bush WILL NOT Protect You

If you learn anything from what's happening right now, PLEASE learn that George W. Bush is not serious about protecting this country from terrorism and he never was. Whatever he's doing monitoring people's telephone communications, it has nothing to do with protecting the American people. Whatever he says tonight on TV has nothing to do with protecting the American people. Everything he says and does is about one of three things: ACQUISITION OF POWER, ACQUISITION OF MONEY, and POLITICAL GAIN. Those are the only "principles" ol' Smirkface cares about.
