Synergies Summit in DC to promote H-1B and offshoring
Given the American unemployment situation, this is outrageous!
From Rob Sanchez' newsletter:
<<<<< JOB DESTRUCTION NEWSLETTER No. 2024 -- 6/11/2009 >>>>>
It looks like the lobbying campaign for more H-1Bs and more offshoring to
India is getting underway. An event called the "Synergies Summit" that is
sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the US India Business Council
(USIBC), will be held in Washington DC on June 16-17.
Make no mistake about it -- the purpose of the summit is to promote Indian
immigration to the U.S. and the offshoring of U.S. industries to India. You
can bet the Indians will also use this opportunity to push their nuclear
"energy" program and to cram their irradiated mangos down our throats. The
corporatalk in the following statement makes it crystal clear what the
agenda is despite the foggy wording:
"Azim Premji, Founding Chairman of WIPRO, who will be felicitated
for his Global Vision, possesses the capabilities and skills to
articulate how global sourcing is a positive force -- one that
provides our businesses the opportunity to remain globally
competitive -- an essential ingredient to creating jobs here at
home and abroad.
The summit will be attended by a "who's who" list of corporate power
brokers, lobbyists, and Indian and US politicians. Several members of
Obama's cabinet will be sucking up there also, including the Senator from
Punjab (Hillary Clinton), who will be one of the keynote speakers.
So far, and not surprisingly, the US media has been almost totally silent
about the summit even though the USIBC called this event a "spectacular
coup". The dead silence shouts loudly that US jobs are on the auction
block. News blackouts of the summit doesn't extend to the Indian press
however, as they are slobbering all over the story.
Be sure to go to the summit public notice link below to see pictures of the
guest list (short link provided). You can join them in DC for the low, low
price of $500. That includes having dinner with the author of "Slumdog
Millionaire." Belch!
It's rather interesting to note that Obama's new nominees aren't on the
guest list: Aneesh Chopra, the nation's Chief Technology Officer (CTO). and
Vivek Kundra, our new Chief Information Officer (CIO). Surely they are
going to attend, so why aren't they on the list?

USIBC?s "Synergies Summit" to "Reboot" U.S.-India Ties
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC), under
the leadership of its Chairman, Indra K. Nooyi, will celebrate 34 years as
the premier business advocacy organization promoting U.S.-India commercial
ties by hosting India's Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Anand
Sharma, together with a constellation of U.S. Cabinet Secretaries,
including Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of Commerce
Gary Locke, and the new U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Ron Kirk.
USIBC will felicitate private sector icons Azim Premji and Anil Ambani,
together with Sy Sternberg. The two-day "Synergies Summit", scheduled June
16/17 in Washington, D.C. will focus on the opportunities that will flow
from inherent synergies bolstering the world?s two largest free-market
democracies.
"With the historic elections in both countries now behind us, USIBC aims to
?bang the pots and pans? and awake both governments as to the real work
that now needs to be completed in order to keep the U.S.-India commercial
and trade relationship flourishing," said Ron Somers, President of USIBC.
"USIBC?s 34th Anniversary `Synergies Summit' will be closely watched and
widely attended by individuals and organizations who can help the
U.S.-India relationship regain the high ground, which we have all worked so
hard to achieve," Somers said. Already 350 business leaders have registered
for attendance, including a high-level Confederation of Indian Industry
(CII) executive mission being led by CII?s new President, Venu Srinivasan
and CII's Chief Mentor, Tarun Das.
Icons from the private sector will be accorded USIBC's highest honors for
their Global Vision, Global Leadership, and Business Excellence at
USIBC's 34th Anniversary "Synergies Summit".
"Azim Premji, Founding Chairman of WIPRO, who will be felicitated for his
Global Vision, possesses the capabilities and skills to articulate how
global sourcing is a positive force -- one that provides our businesses the
opportunity to remain globally competitive -- an essential ingredient to
creating jobs here at home and abroad. Anil Ambani, Chairman of Reliance
ADAG, who will be honored for his exemplary Global Leadership, is at the
cutting edge advancing telecom, energy development, and entertainment --
and, significantly, is fostering the convergence of these exciting sectors.
Sy Sternberg, the recently-retired Chairman of New York Life, will be
lauded for his Business Excellence and Commitment to India. Sy Sternberg
has been a passionate advocate for opening India's insurance sector,
which will contribute greatly to establishing a long-term debt market --
necessary to fund India's massive infrastructure build-out," USIBC's
President said. "On the occasion of USIBC's 34th Anniversary, these three
business icons represent the best of the U.S.-India commercial
relationship."
Inaugurating this star-studded event on June 16th at Washington's newest
building, The Newseum, Slumdog Millionaire author Vikas Swarup will receive
USIBC's 34th Anniversary Award for "Cultural Ties That Bind" for the
author's contribution illuminating aspects of society that facilitate a
deeper understanding and abiding respect for humanity. Sarod Maestro
Aashish Khan will then share the traditions of Indian culture, emphasizing
the synergies of friendship that connect our peoples.
The U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC), formed in 1975 at the request of
the Government of India and the U.S. Government to deepen trade and
strengthen commercial ties is hosted under the aegis of the U.S. Chamber of
Commerce. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business
federation representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations of
every size, sector and region.

USIBC to Hold High-Powered 'Synergies Summit' in D.C.
By RICHARD SPRINGER
indiawest.com June 04, 2009 06:05:00 PM
The US-India Business Council, the premier organization in the U.S.
promoting trade and business between the U.S. and India, is holding one of
the most high-powered India-U.S. business summits in recent memory June
16-17 in Washington, D.C.
In a reflection on how crucial India has become for U.S policymakers, the
forum will feature three Obama administration heavyweights: Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and U.S. Trade
Representative Ron Kirk. Doubtless many more U.S. policymakers in D.C. will
be attending.
Headliners from India will include Wipro Technologies chairman Azim Premji,
Reliance ADA Group chairman Anil Ambani and Confederation of Indian
Industry chief mentor Tarun Das.
Besides USIBC board chairman and CEO Indra K. Nooyi and USIBC board member
and New York Life CEO/chairman Sy Sternberg, the high-powered speaker
line-up includes former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Cohen of the
Cohen Group, former U.S. Ambassador to India Richard Celeste and senior
partner emeritus of McKinsey & Company Rajat Gupta.
The full roster of attendees reads like a Who's Who of business between
the U.S. and India. For conference information, visit: www.usibc.com, or
contact: Nick Lembon, lembo@uschamber.org.
USIBC has followed up upon its spectacular coup in getting Nooyi, easily
the most high-profile Indian American CEO in the U.S., to chair the
organization, by adding many prestigious board members. The group has also
increased its influence by organizing recent meetings in India on specific
business sectors (media and entertainment, telecom and IT) and issued
timely statements on improvements in U.S.-India relations.
Current board members include Cohen, Gupta, Warburg Pincus co-president
Charles Kaye, General Electric India president Tejpreet Chopra, Chatterjee
Group president P.C. Chatterjee and former U.S. Ambassador Frank Wisner.
West Coast board members include Arun Kumar, lead partner, India Practice,
at KPMG LLP; Kenneth Juster, executive vice president, Salesforce.com; Raj
Nathan, chief marketing officer, worldwide, Sybase; and Shailesh Rao,
managing director of Google India.
USIBC president Ron Somers told India-West in an e-mail that the
-"astonishing electoral outcome in India provides a rare opportunity for
USIBC to awaken the Obama administration and India to the absolute
excitement we all feel so deeply about and which was so perfectly expressed
two weeks ago by the people of India."
-"With a new government in India now in formation, and the Obama
administration presently staffing key posts that will shape U.S.-India
engagement for the long future, our companies have much at stake to make
certain that momentum is regained, our trajectory is pointed ever-upward
and our countries are united."
USIBC, celebrating its 34th anniversary in 2009, was formed in 1975 at the
request of the governments of the U.S. and India -"to involve the private
sectors of both countries to strengthen the commercial linkages between the
world's two largest free-market democracies."
Its joint programs include the U.S.-India Economic Dialogue (CEO Forum),
the U.S.-India High Technology Cooperation Group, the U.S.-India Energy
Dialogue, the Defense Procurement and Production Group and the U.S.-India
Trade Policy Forum. Thirteen executive committees and working groups meet
regularly to assess progress on the ground, and USIBC organizes
sector-specific missions to India.
Headquartered at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C., USIBC
has established a presence in New York through the Manhattan-India
Investment Roundtable in affiliation with the U.S. Council for
International Business. USIBC also maintains offices in California and New
Delhi.
Mythili Sankaran, USIBC's newly-named West Coast director in Silicon
Valley, told India-West that USIBC, which has more than 300 members, offers
firms doing business in India -"an incredible resource." The West Coast
office, she added, will capitalize on the fact that so many high-tech firms
are based in Silicon Valley, to promote Indo-U.S. trade in those sectors.
Prior to joining USIBC, Sankaran was CEO of a mobile/Web2.0 startup,
Koollage. Before that, she was an executive at the American India
Foundation.

Obama Admin to unveil its India agenda at USIBC on June 17
Lalit K Jha
Washington, June 9 (PTI) The Obama Administration may unveil its India
agenda at 'Synergies Summit' of the US India Business Council on June 17
when three of its top officials including Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton will be present.
Clinton and other officials are expected to spell out the new
administration's policy for India, with whom the US President has favoured
"deep" strategic relations.
India, on the other hand, would be represented by its Commerce Minister and
some of its leading corporate leaders, including Azim Premji and Anil
Ambani.
Besides Clinton, the United States Government would be represented by its
Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke and US Trade Representatives Ambassador
Ron Kirk at the day-long deliberations between the corporate leaders of the
two countries at the 34th annual convention of the USIBC.
The US officials are expected to articulate the policies of the Obama
Administration towards India and set the ball rolling for the rest part of
Obama's current tenure.
In the first five months of its governance, the Obama Administration had to
wait for the elections in India to be over. Now that the new government has
occupied its seat in New Delhi the White House does not want to waste any
time and it now seems to be all set to put the relationship on fast track.

Protectionism, an issue of concern, needs to be resisted: USIBC
Lalit K Jha/ PTI / Washington June 8, 2009, 10:53 IST
Observing that voices of protectionism emanating from the political
quarters, is an issue of concern for American businesses, an Indo-US
chamber has said it believes that such trends need to be resisted.
"Protectionism is an issue of concern for us. Such an easy political catch
word; we need to resist this," said Ron Somers, President, US India
Business Council (USIBC), and argued that outsourcing, global sourcing is
enabling US companies remain competitive in the world market.
"For American companies to remain globally competitive, our companies are
looking to do business all around the world, accessing best values, best
resources and best talents. It is only then that we can create jobs in the
US," he said.
When specifically asked about H-1B visa and US President Barack Obama
announcing his intention of stopping jobs being outsourced to Bangalore,
India, Somers said the Congressional attack on outsourcing, specifically on
India, is unfortunate.
"The recent legislations introduced in the United States Senate would
severely restrict the flow of high skilled immigrants to the US. We believe
this is harmful. It hurts the American competitiveness," he said, adding
that the US Chamber is working closely with the elected representatives up
on the Hill to resist this campaign rhetoric.
