Lake County to close offices during protest

WAUKEGAN – Lake County government offices located in downtown Waukegan, including the main County Building, the Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Coroner, Public Defender, Adult Probation and Workforce Development office, will close at 4 p.m. Monday, July 16 in advance of a planned protest at Waukegan City Hall.

Law enforcement is anticipating potentially several hundred people converging on the downtown area to protest a potential decision by the Waukegan City Council that would give local police the ability to enforce federal immigration laws, according to a notice released Friday.

Lake County Board Chair Suzi Schmidt and Chief Judge Chief Judge Christopher Starck, in consultation with Lake County elected officials and department heads, made the decision and announced it in the release.

The reason for the early closures, according to the release, was "the potential influx of people and increased congestion related to the planned event."

County officials decided to allow employees to leave at 4 p.m. to avoid possible traffic issues. The County parking facility will also be closed to incoming vehicle and pedestrian traffic at 4 p.m.

Lake County is scheduled to resume regular operating hours, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Tuesday, July 17.
