SAN YSIDRO – The imaging machine used by border authorities got big workout on Friday. They used the device to detect more than 950 pounds of narcotics, worth an estimated $1.7 million, hidden in dashboards, gas tanks, spare tires, tail gates, and other secret compartments in six different smuggling attempts.

The first incident occurred about 3:15 a.m. Friday, when a 37-year-old Mexican citizen driving a blue 1988 Mitsubishi pickup arrived at the San Ysidro border crossing, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). He was referred to a secondary area, where the imaging device detected anomalies in the vehicle.

Officers found 64 packages of marijuana, weighing a total of 106 pounds, hidden in the sides of the truck bed, tail gate and quarter panels.

Around 6 a.m. that same day, a Mexican citizen, 42, arrived at the same border crossing in a gray 1994 Ford Aerostar van. An intensive inspection yielded eight packages of marijuana, weighing a total of eight pounds, hidden on top of the spare tire, suspended in its normal location under the vehicle.

Around 3 p.m., a 28-year-old U.S. citizen driving a 1996 Ford Explorer arrived at the San Ysidro port of entry.

A narcotic detector dog gave a positive response. Further inspection by officers yielded 19 packages of methamphetamine hidden under the floor of the vehicle, weighing about 27 pounds.

About 15 minutes later, a 19-year-old female U.S. citizen driving a 1994 Nissan Maxima arrived at the border crossing.

While the driver was talking with the CBP officer during her inspection, a narcotic detector dog gave a positive response. CBP officers found eight packages of marijuana, weighing almost 13 pounds, hidden inside the vehicle’s dashboard.

About 5:30 p.m., a 28-year-old female U.S. citizen driving a silver 2001 Mitsubishi Montero arrived at the port of entry. Screening with the imaging device revealed anomalies in the spare tire. An officer found 17 packages of marijuana, weighing a total of almost 85 pounds, in the tire.

In the last of the incidents that day, at 9:30 p.m., a 22-year-old male U.S. citizen driving a silver-colored 1999 Dodge Intrepid arrived at the border crossing. A narcotic detector dog gave a positive response.

The imaging device revealed anomalies behind the back seat.

CBP officers removed it and discovered a compartment with 14 packages of marijuana, weighing about 37 pounds total, hidden inside.

The last of the seizures occurred on Sunday at the border crossing in downtown Calexico.

At about 5 p.m., a 44-year-old male U.S. citizen driving a 2004 Chevy Silverado arrived at the crossing. The CBP officer noted that the driver appeared nervous, and when inspecting the vehicle, tapped the gas tank and found it to be suspicious.

CBP officers discovered 69 vacuum-sealed packages of marijuana hidden in the gas tank, weighing a total of about 155 pounds.

In each incident, CBP officers seized the vehicle and narcotics, and turned the driver over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
