Airport agents seize $500,000

Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than half a million dollars from passengers at Metro Airport in Romulus in August.

According to Chief Sheryl Monette of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection unit of the Department of Homeland Security, it is not a crime to transport more than $10,000 when entering or departing the United State, but it is a crime not to declare currency or monetary instruments totaling $10,000 or more to a customs officer upon entry or exit from the U.S.

The seizures, which totaled $557,489 in August, were all from passengers who failed to declare their currency as required by law.

Monette said that her officers and agriculture specialists processed more than 140,000 passengers, and prohibited entry of 2,316 agricultural products, meat items and pests.

She added that 42 of 578 new immigrant passengers were denied entry or were allowed to withdraw their application for entry to the United States for reasons including entering to live or work her without the proper visa.

Officers processed 80 seizures while conducting baggage examinations, 16 for counterfeit items and 64 for prohibited items.
Monette said products prevents from entering the United States are those that would injure community health, public safety, American workers, children, or domestic plant and animal life or those that would defeat our national interests.
