Charlie Flanagan describes progress on reform for undocumented people as ‘real’

Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan has said that “tens of thousands’’ of undocumented Irish in the US could benefit from president Barack Obama’s immigration reforms.

He said the president’s initiative represented progress, albeit with further important steps to be achieved.

“I am happy that progress is real and I am determined that as many Irish nationals as possible will benefit from these changes,’’ he added. In all, he said, there were an estimated 50,000 undocumented Irish in the US.

Mr Flanagan was replying to Dáil questions from Sinn Féin spokesman Seán Crowe following the revelation that Taoiseach Enda Kenny had appealed to Mr Obama for immigration reform affecting undocumented Irish to be as “open and flexible’’ as possible.

The Minster said while the president’s initiative was important and positive, there was no substitute for legislation enacted by the US Congress.

The Government, embassy staff and immigrant groups would continue to work with the US administration.

Engagement would continue with political contacts, he added.

“We will keep building on our network of friends on Capitol Hill.”

Mr Flanagan said while he did not wish to raise expectations on the issue, the president’s initiative was undoubtedly a step in the right direction.

It represented, he said, real and substantial progress and was an acknowledgement of the very hard work undertaken over a long number of years, particularly in recent times, by a number of people.

All sides of the House had expressed a deep-seated interest in dealing with what had been a traumatic experience for tens of thousands of undocumented Irish in the US who had been unable to return to visit their families in Ireland and attend funerals and weddings, said Mr Flanagan.

Independent TD Denis Naugthen said it was critical to get clarity on the travel issues arising from the reform.

Go home, Irish, and attend your funerals and weddings and be part of your own nation where you have citizenship, because it doesn't matter to US if you're from Mexico or Ireland, Guatemala or Canada, if you're an illegal alien, you need to pack up and depart our nation.

U.S. Is Home To 1.5 Million Undocumented Asian Immigrants

    November 28, 2014 5:07 AM ET

The majority of undocumented workers in the U.S. come from Latin America, but there are still huge numbers from elsewhere in the world. Renee Montagne talks to immigration attorney Muzaffar Chishti.

    RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:

When we hear, over these past weeks, from undocumented workers, almost all of them are Latino. And though Latinos are the vast majority, unauthorized immigrants come from lots of other places, including Asia. Muzaffar Chishti is an immigration attorney and head of the Migration Policy Institute's New York office. He says the U.S. is home to about one and a half million undocumented Asian immigrants.

MUZAFFAR CHISHTI: The top four Asian countries of the unauthorized are China, India, Philippines and Korea. And they all probably have the same patterns. Most of them arrive either on a student visa or on a visitor's visa or on a work visa. And that's typically - a visitor's visa is given to you for six months. And after six months, you choose not to return. And then you decide to stay on here, and you try to get a job. And you try to get a job working on someone else's Social Security number or with no Social Security number at all in the underground economy and then hope that you'll find some ways of legalizing your status.

MONTAGNE: And when you say stays on, stays on where, generally speaking?

CHISHTI: The top states in the country of the unauthorized Asian populations are California and New York, New Jersey and Texas. It's closely then followed by Illinois, Virginia and Georgia. So that's the pattern. So it's the traditional gateway immigrant states but also slightly now converging onto places like Virginia and Georgia.

MONTAGNE: A little over two years ago, President Obama offered work permits and protection from deportation to young people brought here by their families illegally as children. Now, you have found there at the Migration Policy Institute that Asian youth are far less likely to apply for deportation reprieve than Latinos. Why?

CHISHTI: Well, I mean, we must caution by saying that we really don't know. These are our best guesses. One is the stigma attached to the illegality. And so people just hide it from each other frequently, even from their families. That's why I think there is less widespread acknowledgment that there are unauthorized people in the Asian population.

But in terms of the participation in the program, I think it is determined by your need. And the need may be determined by whether you want to be able to work. And if you're in school, then you have less need to seek a work permit than if you were looking for a job. And if you live in communities where the constant threat of deportation is not as active as it's in Latino communities, the chances of you feeling the compelling need to apply is much less than, you know, if you're in Latino communities where the fear of being picked up is much higher.

Illegal aliens from Asia, like those from other counties, all need to pack up and depart our nation.

This is such an easy problem to solve. Stop handing out student visas. There are far too many foreign students taking up valuable seats in our colleges and universities that are needed by American students. Why give the good futures away to people on foreign student visas? It's ridiculous! Also, following up on a tourist visa, isn't that why we have a USCIS to hunt down those on expired visas and deport them? And why are tourist visas 6 months? That's a pretty long "tourist" period. Why not shorten it to 45 days? I don't know very much "tourists" who can afford to travel in the US for 6 months and I don't know very many Americans who can afford to travel around America for 45 days. Do you? I mean after a few weeks, even the wealthy ones aren't contributing to our tourism economy, they're either mooching off of relatives or laying plans to stay and violate their visa by finding illegal work and becoming an illegal alien. Stop. Doing. This.

    It's always about the money.

International student surge helps TN's bottom line

Nov 27, 2014: More international students are enrolled at Tennessee universities than ever. The jump in foreign students is adding learning opportunities and lots of money to the state's economy. WBIR

(WBIR - Knoxville) On Thursday a lot of international students at the University of Tennessee will get their first taste of a Thanksgiving dinner. Tennessee's economy has plenty of reason to give thanks for a surge of students from abroad.

"For the state of Tennessee for this past fall, we had an almost 16 percent increase in the amount of international students enrolled at all of the universities in the state," said Joann Ng Hartmann,

Associate Director of the UT Center for International Education. "It's the research opportunities that are attracting them, specifically here at the University of Tennessee."

In the 2013-2014 academic year, there were 8,436 international students enrolled at institutions in Tennessee. Of those foreign students, there were 1,156 at UT's Knoxville campus. That's a 24 percent enrollment increase compared to a decade ago in 2004.

An economic study by The Institute of International Education says foreign students contributed a net amount of more than $242 million dollars to Tennessee's economy last school year.

"Economically, it brings in a whole lot of money," said Ng Hartmann. "The students pay out-of-state tuition and fees. And of course there are living expenses. If they bring their family along, that's even more money to the economy."

Ng Hartmann has worked at UT for 18 years. During that time, she says international students have shifted to predominantly graduate students.

"I'd say around 80 percent of our international students are here for graduate school. They're here for research in STEM fields.

We have a large majority from China, Korea, and India. We are also seeing an increase in students from Brazil and Saudi Arabia because those countries have enough wealth to offer scholarships to send students overseas."

In the last five to six years, UT has placed a larger emphasis on recruiting international students. Many international students knew little about Tennessee before their arrival.

"A large majority of our students who arrive here, the initial first week it's like 'What have I done? Where have I landed?' There are no skyscrapers like some of the massive cities they come from. But they will say to me that the people who are here in Knoxville have been some of the warmest and welcoming in the world," said Ng Hartmann. "It's a whole new experience for them to learn about the American system. But it's also a learning experience for our faculty and staff and students who work with them."

A UT student studies at the campus International House.(Photo: Jim Matheny, WBIR)

Across the United States, foreign students add $26 billion dollars to the nation's economy. Ng Hartmann expects the numbers of international students and their economic impact to continue growing.

"That phenomenon is nationwide. Most universities that are our size or even smaller are seeing a large increase in international students," said Ng Hartmann.

One reason for the jump in foreign students is China's booming economy. More Chinese can now afford to send their students abroad. Earlier this month, the United States also extended the length of Chinese student visas from two years to five years.

Oh for heavens sake. No, they don't. They don't "add" anything, not a dime to the US economy. All they're doing is taking up a seat that would otherwise be filled with Americans who would be spending the same amount of money and stealing the futures of our own college age citizens. This report just shows how dim-witted our educational process has become. They fake reports, can't do basic comparative math, and make available to foreign governments, our research and innovation technologies that they then will use against US.

    Dimwits. Dimwits. Dimwits.

So this is what free trade is all about? Well, no thank you! We have enough of our own people seeking the "good life", we don't need to make it harder for our own by forcing them to compete with Rich Chinese who made theirs by undercutting our employers through treasonous free trade policies or counterfeiting US goods. First you buy their widgets, Second you sell them a seat in our colleges, Third they move in to the gated communities, Fourth, they take over your government and pretend it's theirs.

Foreign students pay higher tuition than local in-state students.
Which means the school make a bigger profit from each of them.
That's why the schools want them.

    Nonresident Tuition Fees

In addition to the tuition fees in the applicable charts above, out-of-state and international students must pay non-resident tuition fees of $372 per unit or fractional unit.

Individual businesses and schools benefit, but in the long run, Americans pay the price for illegals.

Until we get true unemployment down to 4.5%, we shouldn't even consider allowing more foreigners to over stay their visas.
