EAGLE PASS, Texas -- A total of 10,000 rounds of ammunition were found hidden inside a car trying to cross the border into Mexico at Eagle Pass International Bridge on Sunday, authorities said.

Customs officials stopped the driver of a 1995 Ford Winstar van, in which they found 500 boxes hidden in and around the car. The driver was a 26-year-old American citizen.

"This is the largest single seizure of ammunition by CBP [U.S. Customs and Border Protection] officers at Eagle Pass Port of Entry thus far in Fiscal Year 2011," Eagle Pass Port Director Cynthia O. Rodriguez said in a statement.

Eagle Pass officers turned the van and its driver over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations agents for further investigation.
