10 Bodies, 11 human heads found in clandestine graves in southern Mexico

    Published January 07, 2015 EFE

Authorities in Guerrero, the southern Mexican state where 43 students disappeared on Sept. 26, found six clandestine graves containing 10 bodies and 11 human heads, prosecutors said.

The graves were discovered on Tuesday in Tepehuixco, a community outside the city of Chilapa de Alvarez, and most of the bodies had signs of torture, the Guerrero Attorney General's Office said in a statement.

The first two graves contained four bodies, while the third grave held a body wrapped in a trash bag, the AG's office said, adding that four more bodies were in the fourth grave and the fifth grave contained one body.

Nearly all the victims had been tied up, prosecutors said.

"The first bag contained three human heads; in the second, there were two more heads; in the third, three more; and, in the fourth, three more," the AG's office said.

Prosecutors, however, did not say whether the heads belonged to the bodies found in the clandestine graves or to other victims.

Four black trash bags were found in the last grave, but officials did not say what was in the bags.

Chilapa de Alvarez is near Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero, where 43 Ayotzinapa Rural Normal School students disappeared at the hands of corrupt local officials on the payroll of the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel.

Argentine and Austrian forensic specialists identified one of the missing students, whose remains were among those found at the municipal dump in Cocula.

Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam said on Nov. 7, citing statements from three suspects in custody, that the 43 teacher trainees were dead.

Patricio Reyes, Jhonatan Osorio and Agustin Garcia confessed to having killed the students and burned their bodies, the attorney general told a press conference.

More than 70 people, including police and public officials, have been arrested in connection with the events that took place in Iguala on the night of Sept. 26, when municipal police fired gunshots at students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Normal School, a nearby teacher-training facility.

Six people died that night, 25 were wounded and 43 Ayotzinapa students were detained and then handed over to members of the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel.

The missing students' relatives refuse to accept the official version of events and continue searching for the young people. EFE
