120 More Former Dominican Inmates Repatriated from US

More Former Dominican Inmates Repatriated from US

Santo Domingo, Feb 8 (Prensa Latina)

120 former Dominican prisoners who served sentences for drug trafficking, murder, kidnapping, assault and other crimes in the United States arrived in this capital on Sunday.

The group is comprised of 115 men and five women, and arrived at the International Airport of the Americas escorted by federal agents in an aircraft from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

As some of them could be even potentially dangerous, Dominican authorities established a security cordon to receive them. They were taken to the General Directorate of Immigration, where they will be booked by the police and investigated to know whether they have pending issues with local justice before handing them over to their families.

This is the third group of former prisoners who have returned this year.

About 75 former Dominican inmates (70 men and five women) were repatriated on January 22, and a first group of 80 men arrived on January 8.

1,796 former Dominican convicts were repatriated last year, after serving their respective sentences in US prisons.

National Police, U.S. ICE to swap info on deportees

last on Jan 29 at 1:30 PM

    M. Castro, S. Saldaña.

Washington.- Dominican Republic’s National Police and the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Thursday agreed to exchange information about sentences in prisons of deported Dominicans.

Dominican National Police chief Manuel Castro and ICE director Sarah Saldaña signed the agreement at Homeland Security Dept headquarters in Washington, accompanied by several senior US officials.

Saldaña said the agreement improved bilateral relations between the two countries and demonstrates a commitment to ensuring the security of communities.

"When it comes to sharing what affects national security and public safety, there can be no international barrier in the exchange of information," Saldaña said.

The agreement was the result of an ICE initiative, through its ERO Dept., in charge of capturing and deporting aliens who have committed crimes.

ICE, which deported 315,943 foreigners in 2014, has similar agreements with Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, says a statement from the law enforcement agency.

Since October 1, 2009, ERO captured and repatriated 720 foreign fugitives from different countries who were hiding in the United States and were wanted in their countries for crimes such as drug trafficking, murder, rape, fraud, domestic violence and kidnapping.
