Federal agents have asked the Nogales Fire Department to screen 13 people from Africa for Ebola over the past few weeks.

They were traveling from Mexico into the United States and were tested while crossing Ports of Entry near Nogales.

None of the people had the virus.

But Nogales Fire Chief Hector Robles said his department is trained to handle anyone who crosses the border after testing positive for Ebola.

“What the protocol is going to be is that they are going to be driven by ambulance to a designated hospital in Tucson or Phoenix once we know what we are dealing with,” Robles said.

He said Nogales Fire Department only screens people if asked to do so by Customs and Border Protection officers.

A spokeswoman with the Border Patrol said all people crossing into the U.S. are asked where they are coming from and if they have recently experienced a fever or other health problems.
