188 Bodies Found So Far In Durango, Mexico

    Posted: 12:08 pm MDT May 11, 2011

MEXICO CITY -- Security forces excavating mass graves in the northern Mexican state of Durango said they have unearthed eight more bodies, bringing the total to 188 and making it the largest discovery yet of corpses secretly buried by suspected drug traffickers.

The toll surpasses the 183 bodies found in pits in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas last month.

Durango Public Safety Department spokesman Fernando Rios told The Associated Press on Wednesday that soldiers discovered the eight bodies Tuesday. He said digging continues at the pits, which were discovered last month in the state capital, Durango city.

Authorities say some of the victims have been dead for up to four years while others were buried as recently as three months ago.
