Brothers Sergio Alonso Madrigal-Felix, 32, of Redding, and Mario Alfonso Madrigal-Felix, 36, of Anderson, pleaded guilty Tuesday in connection with their scheme to produce and sell false immigration documents, United States Attorney Benjamin Wagner announced.

Mario Madrigal-Felix pleaded guilty to the production of false identification documents, and Sergio Madrigal-Felix pleaded guilty to selling false identification documents.

This case is the product of an investigation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Hales is prosecuting the case.

According to court documents, the brothers produced and sold counterfeit document sets for $150 each that included an alien registration card or green card and a Social Security card with a false number.

An undercover agent purchased three sets on March 22 for three fictitious people.

A total of eight more sets were purchased from the defendants on two other occasions.

A search warrant was issued and agents seized documentmaking equipment, including a laptop, hard drive, printer, and laminator, all of which the defendants have agreed to forfeit to the United States as a part of their plea agreements.

The defendants are scheduled to be sentenced on March 11 by United States District Judge William Shubb.

They have been in custody since their arrest and initial court appearance on July 27.

The defendants each faces a maximum statutory penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
