KEY WEST, Fla. -Two dozen Cuban migrants came ashore Monday morning in Key West.

Key West police spokeswoman Alyson Crean said the 23 men and one woman arrived about 4 a.m.

The group, who arrived on a small boat with the name "Mariana" etched on the side, is now in the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol for processing.

With a shift in the relationship between Cuba and the United States, officials said many Cubans are now attempting the risky journey across the Florida Straits out of fear that the U.S. will change its "wet-foot, dry-foot" policy, which allows any Cuban who reaches the U.S. to stay and pursue citizenship.

The U.S. Coast Guard reports that more than 2,600 Cuban migrants have been captured or intercepted since last Oct. 1, and that tally is expected to match or surpass last year’s total of nearly 4,000.
