29 immigrants rescued in Reynosa stash house
Friday, December 11, 2009 at 7:18 p.m.
Four men with alleged links to the Gulf Cartel are behind bars after authorities rescued 29 immigrants at a stash house in Reynosa.
Mexican federal police reported the rescue of the immigrants on Friday morning.
The El Universal newspaper reported that the 29 immigrants were reportedly from Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and the west African nation of Ghana.
Police found guns and cell phones at the stash house.
El Universal said the kidnapping ring preyed on immigrants trying to illegally enter the United States.
The group promised to help the immigrants cross the border but then turned around and held them captive until their relatives paid for their release.
El Universal identified the four kidnapping suspects as:
* Iván Timoteo Carbajal López, 26, of Veracruz
* Juan Armando Baxil Malaga, 19, of Tabasco
* José Manuel MartÃ*nez Contreras, 28, Cuernavaca
* José MarÃ*a RÃ*os Ortiz, 21, Reynosa
The four men are reportedly linked to the Gulf Cartel and remain behind bars under federal kidnapping charges.
