3 arrested in NM immigrant driver's license case
December 27, 2013, 1:39 pmSANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Three immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally have been arrested in New Mexico after officials say they tried to get state driver's licenses through fraud.
Taxation and Revenue Secretary Demesia Padilla said Friday that state and federal agents arrested the immigrants who lied and said they lived in Albuquerque. Officials say 40-year-old Rafael Frias Landin, 48-year-old Manuel Landin, and 34-year-old Miguel Garcia were taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol.
Authorities say the three were residents of Lakeland, Fla. and came to Albuquerque with the goal of getting driver's licenses.
State law allows immigrants living in the country illegally to obtain driver's licenses but the immigrants must be residents of New Mexico.
Gov. Susan Martinez says she will try for a fourth time to get the law repealed.
