Local TV Channel - Fox 40 stated that the shooter was an undocumented migrant "illegal". They interviewed his brother who could not speak English. He stated that his last name was Monroy, but Marcelo had changed his last name because he was in some kind of trouble.

Calif. sheriff deputy killed in line of duty 26 years to the day his cop father died while on job

    Published October 25, 2014 FoxNews.com

From the left, Placer County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael David Davis Jr. was killed in the line of duty exactly 26 years after his father, Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael David Davis, died in a helicopter crash.

The line of duty killing of a Northern California deputy sheriff Friday occurred 26 years to the day his deputy sheriff father died in the line of duty when his helicopter crashed during a pursuit of drug smugglers.

Michael Davis Jr., 42, of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office was 16 when his father was killed on Oct. 24, 1988. Davis followed Michael Davis Sr. into law enforcement when he got older.

Davis was shot to death Friday morning when a 34-year old man went on a shooting rampage in the Sacramento area. Authorities said the gunman also killed a Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy and wounded two others, Davis’ partner and a 38-year-old Sacramento civilian.

“I looked at my calendar and said, ‘Oh, God,’” Rick Kotholow, a retired Riverside County deputy sheriff told the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

Kothlow told the paper he worked with the elder Davis in Riverside and it was he who knocked on the door to tell Davis’ wife of the helicopter crash.

He said Davis Jr. was the one who opened the door.

The helicopter was carrying Davis’ 34-year-old father, four other deputy sheriffs and three National Guardsmen as part of Operation Border Ranger, a joint drug smuggling interdiction operation near the Mexico border.
The chopper snagged on a power line and exploded in a hillside, according to the website of the California Peace Officers Memorial Foundation.

The suspect , described as a "one-man crime spree," Marcelo Marques of Salt Lake City eluded hundreds of searchers before being hunted down and forced to surrender, authorities said.

He was examined at a hospital for unknown injuries.

"I think there's those people who would say, 'You know what, I wish you'd killed him,'" Placer County Sheriff Ed Bonner said at a news conference Friday evening, according to Fox 40 Sacramento. "Now, that's not who we are. We are not him. We did our job."

Marquez, 34, and a woman also taken into custody were questioned by investigators about their motives late Friday night, said Sacramento County sheriff's Sgt. Lisa Bowman said.

It wasn't immediately clear when they would be formally booked.

The deadly chain of events began around 10:30 a.m. when Sacramento County sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver, 47, was shot in the forehead with an assault rifle at close range as he checked out a suspicious car in a Motel 6 parking lot, authorities said.

Oliver, 47, was the first county deputy killed since 2008. The 15-year veteran left a wife and two daughters.

"He was not able to return fire or do anything" but his partner was able to shoot back, Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones said.

The car, which had a man and woman inside, then drove about a mile and the couple tried to carjack a driver and shot him in the head when he refused to give up his keys, authorities said.

Anthony Holmes, 38, of Sacramento, was listed in serious condition at a hospital Friday night, the Sacramento Bee reported.

The attackers then stole another car and finally took a red Ford pickup from Jose Cruz, who was gardening outside a client's house in Sacramento.

Cruz told the Bee that a man in a white Ford Mustang convertible told him: "I need a favor."

    "What's the favor?" Cruz asked.

"Your keys," the man said. "Hurry up, because they're chasing me...I don't want to hurt you."

Cruz said the man pointed a gun at him and had a bloody shirt wrapped around his other arm.

The couple then fled to neighboring Placer County, about 30 miles north of Sacramento, authorities said.In Auburn, the truck briefly pulled over to the side of a road where Davis and his partner Jeff Davis (no relation) spotted it and approached.

The gunman shot them with an AR-15-type assault weapon, Placer County sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin said.

Davis, assigned to homicide investigations, died at a hospital. He was a 15-year veteran of the department and a father of four.

Davis, a 17-year veteran, was shot in the arm. He was released after treatment at a hospital.

"This guy was on a one-man crime spree today. He has no idea of the damage he did," Erwin said.

Dozens of deputies flooded the area but the gunman fled into a neighborhood near a high school and ran into a home.

Police finally used tear gas to flush Marquez from the basement of the home, witnesses said.

The long manhunt involved hundreds of officers from multiple agencies backed by search dogs, helicopters and armored vehicles. Residents nearby were told to stay indoors, and schools were locked down during the search.

Flags at the state Capitol were ordered flown at half-staff and Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement extending his sympathy to the families of the slain officers.

Their "brutal murders," Brown said, "...are a tragic reminder of the sacrifices we demand of our peace officers and the incredible courage they display as they protect our communities."

The slaying of the deputies was the single deadliest day for California law enforcement since February 2013. In separate incidents that month, former Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner killed two law enforcement officers, and two Santa Cruz police detectives were shot and killed.

U.S. immigration officials said Saturday that the man accused of killing two Northern California sheriff's deputies Friday is a convicted drug dealer who was twice deported from the country.

Luis Enrique Monroy Bracamonte, 34, has been booked on charges of murder, attempted murder and carjacking in connection with a rampage through Sacramento and Placer counties that left two sheriff's deputies dead, another injured and a civilian seriously wounded.

Monroy, an undocumented immigrant, was deported in 1997 following his arrest and conviction in Arizona for possession of narcotics for sale, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He was arrested and repatriated to Mexico a second time in 2001.

The agency has lodged an immigration detainer asking the Sacramento County Sheriff Office to transfer Monroy to ICE custody if he is released so that it can begin deportation proceedings.

Monroy was charged under the name Marcelo Marquez, but officials now say that was an alias.

Carjacking Victim in Multi-County Crime Spree Fighting for His Life

    POSTED 10:57 PM, OCTOBER 24, 2014,
    BY KAY RECEDE,

SACRAMENTO-The civilian in Friday’s shootings is fighting for his life.
As Anthony Holmes’ condition is continually monitored, those who know him best are hoping for the best.

Holmes was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. According to relatives, doctors are waiting to operate on him but are unable to do so because of the swelling around his head.

As the Murphy’s celebrate another year of life for Javana Murphy’s mother, they’re holding vigil for Holmes.

“I’m kind of shook up,” Tyrone Murphy, a relative of Anthony Holmes told FOX40.

Holmes is one of four victims in Friday’s deadly shooting. The Murphy’s said a bullet hit Holmes’ hands and neck.
“We were talking to him and then all of a sudden today it’s like, you know, this all happened. So tomorrow’s never promised,” Javana Murphy, a friend of the victim said.

The Murphys are trying to make sense of a senseless act. They explained, Holmes wanted to be a better man for his children.
“He’s a good father, he stays in all his children’s lives. He’s outgoing, he’s outspoken,” Javana added.

He was a good friend to them both with their last conversation still fresh in their minds.

“He said, ‘Tyrone, stay out of the way because there’s a lot of things going on in Sacramento right now.’ He didn’t want me to get caught up or killed and I said I love you, thank you,” Tyrone told FOX40, tears welling up in his eyes.

As the Murphy’s continue to hold Holmes in their prayers and thoughts, they do their best to hold onto the special moments.

Suspect in 2 California deputy deaths charged with murder, carjacking

(Reuters) - A Utah man was charged with carrying out a crime spree in Sacramento that killed two California sheriff's deputies and wounded a third, law enforcement officials said on Saturday.

A fourth victim, a motorist who was shot in the head, remained hospitalized Saturday, officials said.

Marcelo Marquez, 34, of Salt Lake City, was booked into Sacramento County Jail early Saturday and faces two counts of murder, two counts attempted murder and carjacking charges, a sheriff's spokesman said.

The suspect's female companion, Janelle Marquez Monroy, was also arrested and charged with attempted murder and carjacking, according to online jail records.

Marquez was accused of staging a crime spree Friday that stretched from Sacramento to the town of Auburn about 35 miles (56 km) away, prompting a massive, multi-agency police response and forcing the lockdown of schools and businesses.

The incident began early Friday in the parking lot of a Motel 6, when veteran Sacramento Deputy Danny Oliver, 47, approached a vehicle considered to be suspicious, said Sacramento County Sheriff Lieutenant R.L. Davis.

Someone inside the car fired multiple rounds at Oliver, who was struck in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the University of California, Davis, Medical Center in Sacramento.

After shooting Oliver, Marquez, accompanied by his female associate, carjacked a motorist, shooting him in the head when he resisted, authorities said. The victim, Anthony Holmes, 38, was recovering at U.C. Davis Medical Center, the Sacramento Bee reported.
The pair then stole a third vehicle, a 2002 red Ford F-150 pickup truck, and are believed to have crossed into neighboring Placer County, shooting two sheriff's deputies there, Davis said.

One of the deputies, 42-year-old Michael David Davis Jr., later died, the sheriff's office said.

A somber procession on Saturday transported Davis' body to a funeral home, according to the department's official Facebook page.
Davis was a 15-year veteran with the department and died 26 years to the day after his father and namesake, Michael David Davis, was killed while on duty as a sheriff's deputy in southern California, officials said.

A third law enforcement officer, Placer Deputy Jeff Davis, was shot in the arm and treated at a local hospital, the department said.
Marquez finally surrendered around 4 p.m. local time after holing up in a house, the Sacramento sheriff's department said.
Both suspects were to be arraigned this week, Sacramento and Placer officials said.
