CAIRO: Saudi authorities have deported Saturday 52 Egyptian expatriates for infringing residency laws, said officials from Cairo International Airport.

The deported Egyptians told Youm7 that they were deported “due to differences with sponsors (individuals or companies) and illegal residency.” Egyptian laborers travel to Gulf States either by obtaining a free visa or via a local sponsor.

It became a common custom for foreign labor in Gulf States to deliver their passports to their sponsor upon arrival. The individual sponsor has the authority to renew the residency of each labor.

In case of problems between the laborer and the sponsor, the latter can refuse to renew the residency and call the authorities to deport the laborer.

More than 3.5 million Egyptians have worked in Gulf States, including 985,000 workers in Saudi Arabia, according to the latest statistics of Egyptian Ministry of Manpower in 2014.

In 2013, Saudi Authorities have deported about 200,000 foreign workers in four months due to illegal residency.
