Agent shoots at group hurling rocks from Mexico

EL PASO, Texas A Border Patrol agent in El Paso today shot at a group of people throwing rocks at him from across the Rio Grande.

    Authorities say nobody was hurt.

Officials say the group of suspected illegal immigrants hurled the rocks after running back across the river from Texas when they spotted the agent.

They threw the rocks from about 25 yards away.

Authorities say the agent, whose name wasn't released, fired at least once.

Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, police officers went to the area -- but didn't find anyone.

So-called "rockings" have become so prevalent that the feds have put up high-impact plastic glass barriers in spots along the Rio Grande.

Agents in some parts of the border are even starting to see "flaming rocks" _ wrapped in cloth, soaked in alcohol and lit.

Don't they know family values don't stop at the Rio Grande?

Border Patrol Agents, you do what you have to do. The American people stand behind you all the way. I'm sorry your president doesn't.

    Stay safe.

You can rest assured that the agent who fired on the people throwing rocks at him will soon be reprimanded. I live here. I know what happens to law officers who discharge their weapons for any reason against an illegal alien.

    Border Patrol Agent Assaulted
Authorities said there has been another incident of border violence, in which a Border Patrol agent was assaulted.

Border Patrol said just 5 miles east of the Ysleta port of entry an agent was hit by rock throwers from the Mexican side.

Authorities said the agent did discharge his weapon for his own protection, but no one was hit.

    There were no injuries.

Both Border Patrol and Mexican authorities are investigating the incident.

    Agent shoots at attackers

    Daniel Borunda
    El Paso Times
    Friday, March 3, 2006

A U.S. Border Patrol agent opened fire when he was attacked by men with rocks shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday near the Rio Grande in the Lower Valley, an agency spokesman said.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which remained under investigation Thursday night. The attack, officials said, is part of an increase of assaults on agents in the El Paso region.

The unidentified agent was about five miles east of the Zaragoza Bridge when he was assaulted with rocks by a group of possible undocumented immigrants, who ran back into Mexico, said Agent Ramiro Cordero, a Border Patrol spokesman.

The assault took place on U.S. soil, but investigators were attempting to determine where the attackers were when the agent fired, officials said.

"Our agent was on U.S. soil, of course. They (attackers) were in the river. They were in the dry riverbed," Cordero said.

Mexican authorities, who were called for help, found no evidence that anyone was wounded, Border Patrol officials said.

Assaults on agents have been "growing significantly," Cordero said. "It depicts the pressure we are putting on the border because they are going to extreme measures."

In fiscal year 2005, the Border Patrol recorded 43 assaults against agents in the El Paso sector, compared with 21 in fiscal 2004.

Nationwide, agents were assaulted 687 times in fiscal year 2005, which ended in September, compared with 354 the previous year.

Does it really matter if they were on US soil, in the riverbed or on the Mexican side? Makes no sense at all. This border agent was attacked and had a legal right to defend himself.

Had-Enuf, that is the El Paso Times twisting of the facts to try to make it look like the border patrol agent is in the wrong and those poor illegal aliens who were throwing rocks at him are somehow right. I have seen this same type of scenario unfold a hundred times. In El Paso, TX. the cops are wrong and the illegal aliens are right. Give it about a week and the Border Patrol agent will probably be suspended.

Border Patrol Says Violence Is Growing In El Paso Area

U.S. Border Patrol officials say assaults against local agents are increasing dramatically. Halfway into this fiscal year, there have already been 36 assaults in our area, compared to 42 assaults in the entire previous fiscal year. Border Patrol agents say rocks are becoming a common weapon.

As KFOX reported on Thursday an agent was attacked by rock throwers by the Ysleta Port of Entry. "As they got closer to the river, they continued to assault him by throwing rocks at him which actually struck the agent. The agent drew his weapon and fired one shot at one of the people who were assaulting him," said Chief Deputy Robert Boatwright from the U.S. Border Patrol.

No one was injured in Thursday's incident, but, Border Patrol agents took us out to one area along the Mexican border in West El Paso where a previous rock throwing incident did cause serious injury. "One of our agents was assaulted by a rock in this location. He was taken to the hospital and received over 25 stitches or staples to his head," Boatwright said.

Agents believe the attacks are mostly because those trying to cross are frustrated or are trying to divert agents. Many of those trying to cross hide within the brush around the Rio Grande. "Often times what we see when an agent may be pursuing a group of individuals back toward the river, there is other people along the river on either side laying in wait, if you would, and on occasion our agents have been ambushed by these types of rock-throwing groups," Boatwright said.
