    Alabama-New Requirements Under Immigration Law

2012 Brings New Requirements Under Ala. Immigration Law

    By: Jamiese Price
    Updated: January 10, 2012

Parts of Alabama's new immigration law went into effect on January 1. School systems must use the E-Verify System; a computer based program that determines if a person is authorized to work in the United States. The program is used for all new employees.

"It's another example of paper work, verification, and one of those unintended consequences of the law that we really weren't prepared for to begin with. In the end it's an additional cost to the tax payers," said Henry County Schools Superintendent Dennis Coe.

Coe said Henry County Schools have already used the E-Verify system with three of their new employees. He said this process will become a bigger burden during the summer when the school district does most of its hiring.

"Right now it's taking time for my staff to send out these mailers and get the information out, but certainly with the extra requirements it's going to take some extra manpower and extra money," continued Coe

Coe said the biggest problem isn't the new employee verification process, it's verifying the contractors who work with schools.

"If it's someone who does pest control for our kitchens, or the company who may provide garbage pickup for our schools we have to print affidavits for them, they have to be signed, notarized, and returned back to the school to verify that all of their employees are in compliance. "

If a company uses subcontractors they will also need to be verified. Henry County Schools have mailed more than 300 affidavits to vendors that work with the school.

What an overblown exaggeration of the process. Would they make the same type of complaint if they had to vet all these same people for child predators? Which, in my opinion, should be a law if it isn't already.

Would GOP front runner Mitt Romney agree with that?
