Since Washington is in such a forgiving and compassionate mode right now – preparing various pieces of legislation offering forgiveness and amnesty for millions and millions of people who have broken the immigration laws of the country, I have an idea.

Today is April 17, the last day Americans can postmark their tax returns for 2005. There's a mad scramble on at post offices all over the country. It's an annual ritual – made more complicated this year by the dates on which Easter and Good Friday fell.

But it illustrates the way hard-working, taxpaying American citizens jump through the hoops of the bureaucrats each year so they won't face fines and jail time for tax evasion.

Maybe taxpaying U.S. citizens should take a page from the lesson book of the illegal aliens.

It doesn't seem like they live in fear of jail time, fines or deportation. Instead, they are out in the streets today, as you read this, demanding their "rights." What rights are those? I don't know. As illegal aliens, they have no rights of U.S. citizenship. And, as lawbreakers, they should have every expectation of being dealt with harshly by authorities.

    But they don't.

They understand there is power in numbers. And, thanks to years of neglect of our borders and immigration laws by Washington politicians of both parties, the illegals have the numbers.

So they do not ask for mercy. They do not ask for forgiveness. They do not ask for leniency. Instead, they demand that Washington heed their cries – not just for amnesty, but for reparations for years of imagined abuse and injustice, for control of a land they say is rightfully theirs as "indigenous" peoples and for special favors based on their ethnic background and history of "persecution."

    I have a better idea.

How about a little consideration – a little forgiveness, a little amnesty, a little compassion for the people who really make this country work?

What would be wrong with a tax amnesty?

How about wiping the slate clean for all those facing late fees and non-filing fines?

Since it is so important to Washington to bring the illegals into the system, how about making an effort to do the same for U.S. citizens who have done no more than missed a tax payment or a filing deadline?

How about stopping all of the intrusive audits of American citizens?

How about allowing anyone who "cheated" on a prior year to register for leniency like the illegal aliens will be asked to do under the various amnesty programs being debated?

The mere fact that no one is debating any such tax amnesty program in Washington today suggests that American citizens continue to be viewed by the politicians and bureaucracy as "patsies." You will take whatever they dish out without protest. You won't take to the streets. You won't demand accountability. You won't push your weight around.

In fact, you will be forced to carry a bigger and bigger load. You will pay more in taxes, more in health-care insurance, more in school-bond measures, more for police patrols, more for graffiti-removal, more for car insurance and so forth.

Mark my words: If you don't stand up to be counted today, your birthright as a U.S. citizen will be rendered meaningless. The rule of law will be a thing of the past. The will of the people will mean only mob rule.

It's time for amnesty, all right. It's time for amnesty for American citizens who have taken it on the chin for too long. We don't need forgiveness. We just demand that the crimes being perpetrated against us stop right now.

    Moose,

This is right on. We respect our tax laws and the vast majority of us abide by tax rules. That is what angers us the most about the illegal aliens. We are playing by the rules and avoiding punishment. Illegals are not playing by the rules and are being rewarded. Good old Double Standard.
