Amnesty foes plan to 'greet' Obama in Vegas

President Obama plans to appear with Sen. Harry Reid at a Las Vegas high school Friday where he is expected to offer more details of his amnesty plan for up to 5 million illegal immigrants.


Once inside the Del Sol High School he is likely to be cheered by the school’s mostly Hispanic student body, but amnesty protesters are planning to gather outside the school and send an even louder message to the president.
“We have not found the exact time of his speech but we’re asking people to arrive around 8:30 a.m. We’ll be doing a rally before he arrives,” said Robin Hvidston, executive director of We the People Rising, a group based in Orange County, California, that will be traveling to Las Vegas to protest.
Hvidston’s group was on the front lines of a protest in July that stood in front of a Homeland Security bus delivering illegal-alien children to Murrieta, California.
“We The People Rising members were in front of that bus,” she said, adding that her group is fearless and eager to make a statement Friday morning in opposition to Obama’s plan, which is set to be announced in a nationally televised speech at 8 p.m. tonight.
Del Sol is the same high school where Obama two years ago announced his DACA (deferred action for childhood arrivals) program for Latinos, which many critics believe helped cause the subsequent surge at the border.
Hvidston’s group was in Vegas to protest the DACA announcement as well.
“They allowed us to stand right across from the school and his motorcade came right by us but tomorrow’s event could be something entirely different. You never know. Our plans are to be on the sidewalk across from the school with signs and banners and we understand there are Las Vegas tea party groups that will be joining us. So it is all in progress. We’ve had less than 24 hours to plan for this. They didn’t give us much time. We will be there in full force with American patriots holding signs to protest his unilateral executive action.
“We just feel like the battle is on and it begins tomorrow, in front of this high school, and we are calling on the American public to contact our members of Congress and law officers to stand up and stop this executive overreach,” she added. “That is going to be our message to the American public and to Obama.”
We the People Rising was announcing the protests on its Facebook page and also working to get the word out through Twitter, Hvidston said.
The decision to announce amnesty for illegals on Mexican Revolution Day, Nov. 20, was probably not a coincidence, Hvidston said.
“We’re highly aware of what’s going on tonight, and we are actively involved right now calling our senators and representatives,” she said. “The president’s alliance is not to his heart or his feelings on this issue, it’s to our United States Constitution.”
Also working to get the word out about the Las Vegas protests is James Neighbors of Overpasses for America,whose website implored Americans Thursday to “Join the Revolution!!”
Overpasses worked with Americans for Legal Immigration this summer to protest in hundreds of cities leading up to the Nov. 4 election, which swept out scores of congressmen supporting amnesty.
“You know it’s just one more way that Obama’s chosen to disrespect the United Sates especially when you consider Las Vegas, it’s pretty much dead center of the Lost States area that some Mexican nationalists like La Raza want to reclaim,” Neighbors said. “It’s not by accident. It’s intentional.”
Neighbors also believes the blackout in coverage of tonight’s amnesty announcement by the three major television networks, ABC, NBC and CBS, is “no accident.”
“That’s not a snub, that is silence by consent, and not allowing the American people to know what’s going on,” he said. “It will allow them to do damage control because the news is not coming out all at once. It will give the spin doctors the opportunity to react to the reaction. It’s good politics really. I have to give them some props there with this one. The amount of manipulation of the press by the White house since 2008, it’s amazing, frightening.”
Neighbors said the content of Obama’s speech tonight is not as important as the reaction by Americans.
“Boy who knows what he’s going to say. I think we’re all kinda holding our breath on that. I don’t know, the backlash is really what I’m interested in,” he said. “How do the American people react when suddenly 4 to 5 million illegals won’t risk deportation? That’s 4 to 5 million when we have how many Americans out of work now? We need a Congress and a president that’s America first, and it hasn’t been that way in a while. Really ever since NAFTA we’ve had this whole globalization thing going on and it’s destroying our economy.”
He said the U.S. Chamber of Commerce wants “no borders” and “the cheapest possible labor conditions.”
Meanwhile, Republicans have offered little so far in the way of resistance to amnesty by executive order.
Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn of Texas told the New York Times that the president’s “unilateral action, which is unconstitutional and illegal, will deeply harm our prospects for immigration reform.”
A staffer in the office of Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., told WND that he was in discussions with leaders on how to react and that defunding the executive order was definitely on the table. Lawsuits are also being discussed.
Sen. Mitch McConnell told the Times that regardless of the tactical considerations, the party intends to seize on Obama’s immigration actions as a central issue as the new Congress takes office in January. A steady stream of Republicans took to the podium Thursday in Congress to condemn Obama for what they expected him to announce – that he will protect up to 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation and grant many of them permits to work in the U.S.
Regardless of its content, tonight’s announcement will fuel the battle to sway public opinion that is already well under way.
