Police: Man Drove Drunk on Southern State With 4 Kids in Car

The man had a blood alcohol content of more than twice the legal limit, police say.

A Brooklyn man has a blood alcohol content of .18, more than twice the legal limit, when he was arrested for driving drunk with four children in his SUV Saturday night, State Police announced Monday afternoon.

According to police, a trooper stopped a black Toyota Sequoia for weaving and failing to signal a lane change on the westbound Southern State Pkwy near Exit 29–Route 107–in North Massapequa at 8:54 p.m.

While interviewing the driver, 46-year-old Oscar Salguero-Ayala, the trooper detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, police said.

Salguero-Ayala failed sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested for DWI, police said. There were four children under the age of 16 inside Salguero-Ayala’s SUV. Police did not specify if Salguero-Ayala is related to the children, who were released to a family member.

Salguero-Ayala is charged with aggravated DWI–a felony under Leandra’s Law–four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and traffic violations. He was arraigned in court Sunday and was being held on $500 bail.

Salguero-Ayala was arrested about two hours before another man was arrested by Nassau Police Saturday night in New Hyde Park for allegedly driving drunk with three children unrestrained in his pickup truck.
