ANYONE EVER HEAR OF "DE LUZ" ? TEMECULA, CA

Brothers face attempted murder, robbery charges in De Luz crime

By: JOHN HALL - Staff Writer

FRENCH VALLEY -- Two migrant workers described for a judge Friday where they were shot during a robbery at an avocado grove in De Luz earlier this year.

The crime happened April 7 at a grove near Los Gatos and Carancho roads in the hills west of Temecula. Two gunmen were going to rob the foreman on what was payday for numerous grove workers, but ended up firing wildly at the group when the workers started to run away.

Two brothers, Esau and Ismael Vasquez, were arrested a few days later and appeared in a Southwest Justice Center courtroom Friday so a judge can decide whether there is enough evidence for them to stand trial.

The Vasquez brothers have been charged with two counts of attempted murder, as well as one count each of robbery and kidnapping to commit robbery.

There didn't appear to be much brotherly love between them Friday, however, when a Riverside County sheriff's investigator testified that one implicated the other after they were arrested.

Esau Vasquez, 24, turned and glared at his 16-year-old brother who shook his head back and forth as the investigator testified. Ismael Vasquez has been charged as an adult.

Investigator Fred Collazo said Ismael told him that he and his brother went to the avocado grove that day to rob the foreman. The younger Vasquez also told him they and their cousin had discussed the best time to commit the crime.

During questioning by the defense, Collazo testified that Ismael said it was their cousin who set up the robbery and that he and his brother only fired after armed grove workers fired at them first.

The investigator testified Ismael told him he took a .22-caliber rifle and his older brother had a .45-caliber pistol. That brought another stare from Esau Vasquez at his brother and a response of more negative head shakes from Ismael.

"One of the workers spotted them," Collazo told the judge, "so they decided to grab the worker and hold him until the foreman got there."

The worker they are accused of abducting that morning is 20-year-old Vicente Avalos.

Avalos testified on the first day of the hearing, two weeks ago, that he was grabbed about 7 a.m and held against his will until about 2 p.m. when the foreman arrived.

"They threw me on the ground, they tied me up," Avalos said through a Spanish translator.

Each of the defendants also had interpreters during the hearing.

Avalos said he was beaten and kicked, one of the kicks knocking out a tooth. The men, both wearing masks, took about $15 from his wallet, Avalos said.

Taken to a rock on another ranch about 300 feet away, the men said they would kill him if they couldn't find the foreman or if he tried to run away.

When they took him back to the first ranch once the foreman got there, shots were suddenly fired by both men, Avalos said.

He pointed to his right side, just below his arm pit, showing Judge Judith Clark where he was hit by one of the bullets.

Avalos said that one of the gunmen took off his mask and that he recognized him as Esau Vasquez, someone who had previously worked at the avocado grove.

A second gunshot victim also testified Friday.

Cristobal Gonzalez, who was unable to spell his first or last name for the court reporter, also used a translator and said he had worked in the avocado field for about 12 years. He described what happened the day he was shot.

"A lot of bullets started flying right away," Gonzalez told the judge.

He showed the judge where he was hit by gunfire that day, pointing to his left rib and the inside of his left arm.

The hearing is scheduled to resume later this month after which Clark will announce her decision.

Man's body found in De Luz

By: JOHN HALL - Staff Writer

DE LUZ ---- The body of a migrant worker, apparently shot in the head, was found Tuesday morning in some bushes off Sandia Creek Drive in the hills west of Temecula.

About 6:30 a.m., Riverside County sheriff's deputies were sent to Sandia Creek Drive and Via Vaquero Road regarding some suspicious circumstances, said Sgt. Richard Rile of the department's Central Homicide Unit.

A property owner in the area directed deputies to the body of a Latino man, whose body was found in a migrant camp site in some brush off Sandia Creek Drive.

The dead man's name has not been released by authorities pending notification of family, Rile said Tuesday afternoon. The slaying happened sometime overnight, the sergeant said.

The property owner, who declined to give his name, stood outside the yellow crime scene tape Tuesday morning and talked about the victim.

"He kept quiet; he kept to himself. He didn't want any trouble," the man said.

He said the victim had been in the De Luz area for a year or two and described him as "a big strong guy and a real hard worker."

Many property owners, including himself, and residents in the area had previously hired the victim to do work for them, the man said.

"We'd hire him because he was such a good, strong worker," he added.

The property owner said another migrant worker asked him to go check out the body "to see if it was real."

When he got to the body, the De Luz man said, it was obvious the victim was dead and had been shot in the head.

One of the other area workers told him it happened about 4 a.m., the man said.

Investigators spent all morning at the crime scene, which was up a long dirt road, past a small orange grove and some large trees.

Around 11:30 a.m., a contingent of investigators, a deputy coroner and a deputy district attorney made the hike to where the body was found, returning about 45 minutes later.

In the early afternoon, they headed to a spot along Fuerte Road, slightly more than two miles from the crime scene, where a deputy had found a car the victim was known to share with others.

The car was towed to Southwest Sheriff's Station, and homicide investigators interviewed some workers in the area.

Rile said investigators are also looking for anyone who may have witnessed the crime or have any information about what happened.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-2777, or the Southwest Sheriff's Station at (951) 696-3000.

    General Background
The De Luz Community Services District is comprised of approximately 20,000 acres in the Santa Rosa plateau, a mountainous area situated due west of the City of Temecula. The area is primarily agricultural in nature, with a majority of acres planted in avocados and citrus.

About 60% of the area was originally developed by Kaiser-Aetna Corporation. The corporation subdivided the lots and built the majority of the approximately 80 miles of roads within the District territory. These privately-maintained public roads were originally provided maintenance by either the adjoining property owners, or by one of five homeowner associations created coincidentally with the initial sale of lots by Kaiser-Aetna. Following the storms of Winter 1977-1978, area property owners determined that some public agency should have the responsibility for road maintenance, as well as other needed public services, and petitioned Riverside County LAFCO to create a Community Services District.

The De Luz Community Services District was established in November 1978 by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. It began operations in March 1979 under the provisions of the Community Services District Act (Section 61000 et. seq. of the California Government Code). Upon establishment, it was granted the power to perform three functions: road construction and maintenance, refuse collection, and extended police protection.

The District is divided into five geographical zones. In an attempt to achieve equity in costs, the maintenance of the primary roads, and the general and administrative costs are shared equally on a "per acre" basis by all property owners within the District. The cost of maintaining the secondary roads is shared equally on a "per acre" basis by the property owners of the zone in which those roads are located.

My mother has some friends that live there. It is considered a fairly exclusive area. It is just north of the San Diego county line, and is in Riverside county. They grow allot of avocado's in the area as well as some grapes for wine. My parents friends are pretty wealthy a retired doctor and his wife, they have 3 - 5 acres, they live in a large house and the rest is avocado trees. The growers don't own the land they have arrangements with the estate owners. apparently growers tend the trees with their crews of illegal aliens and the property owners get a cut of the avocado proffits. Apparently this is very common. The property owners do it to subsidize their income.
I wonder if the recent events are allarming to the people who live there?
From what I know the residence are pretty much devoid of concern and disconnected from the agricultural aspect of the area. The residents are; wealthy older white semi retired estate owners, surrounded by hills and lots of avocado trees.
If you visit there one will see crews everywhere of male illegal aliens, groups of men on the roads, at the neighbors and in your back yard watering, pruning and picking.
From what I have assertained avocados only grow in very specific climates and DeLuz has one of them. Lately though I have heard my mom say that her friends the live in DeLuz complain about avocado's not being proffitable or "worth it". apparently the US started allowing the importation of avocado's from Mexico a few years ago, thus driving down avocado prices.
If I lived there I would start to look at the illegal alien work crews a whole lot differently now.
