Those in support of Colorado Referendum H argue that it targets the employment of unauthorized aliens, which is the root cause of illegal immigration. By reducing the financial advantage a business gains from paying lower wages to people illegally in this country by eliminating tax breaks for hiring illegal aliens, employers will be encouraged to hire people lawfully in Colorado and pay them higher wages.

As a result, this provides a more competitive environment for businesses that pay higher wages to legal workers. Donald Rice, author of Compendium of Illegal Immigration Data, estimates an economic loss to Colorado workers of $2 billion ($2,030,807,803) caused by the downward drag of illegal labor wages paid by Colorado employers.

As long as job opportunities exist for illegal workers, the incentive to come to Colorado, or overstay visas anywhere in the United States, will continue to grow and exist. By reducing the number of jobs available to unauthorized aliens, more job opportunities will be open to Colorado residents; which offers benefits such as a lower unemployment rate, additional cash flow being spent in internal communities, and less reliance on government assistance; which in turn increases consumer spending, especially at the local level.
