Advocates to rally on behalf of illegal alien immigrant

Advocates to rally on behalf of illegal immigrant
    January 28, 2012

Immigration reform advocates will rally Monday night in Cincinnati and around the country on behalf of a Reading woman they fear will commit suicide if she is deported Tuesday to her native Mexico.

Yanelli Hernandez, 22, suffers from depression and has twice attempted suicide, in 2008 and again while in custody this past summer in the Butler County Jail, according to a request for stay of removal and deferred action filed Friday to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials in Detroit.

Her 2008 suicide attempt led to her hospitalization at University Hospital in Cincinnati, where she received counseling and anti-depressant medication, her attorney wrote in the filing. While in custody in Butler County, she stabbed her wrists with pencils and was placed in a segregated unit and medicated.

Hernandez entered the United States illegally from Mexico nine years ago at age 13. She crossed the border alone and has lived in Greater Cincinnati and worked for five consecutive years in a local factory – paying federal, state and local taxes.

On Wednesday, a federal immigration judge issued an order of deportation. ICE transferred Hernandez from federal holding at the Butler County Jail in Hamilton overnight Friday to another federal center in the Morrow County Jail, Mount Gilead.

“She has an order of deportation, so she will be going some day (back to Mexico),” her pro-bono attorney, Jorge Martinez, told the Enquirer. “Advocates in Cincinnati have secured mental health services for her. We are asking that she be allowed to stay to receive treatment.”

Police arrested Hernandez in Fairfield in April on suspicion of DUI. She admitted to calling the arresting officer “a racist pig who hates Mexicans,” her attorney said.

A judge sentenced her to three months in jail for DUI and six months for forgery because Hernandez produced a Consular Identification Card – which is issued by the Mexican government through its consulate offices to Mexican nationals residing outside of the country. Attorney Martinez said the card was not a forgery.

Private U.S.-based organizations pushing for tougher immigration laws, stricter enforcement and more aggressive deportation action consider such cards an attempt to promote amnesty. Still, some U.S. banks accept the cards as valid forms of identification.

Mary Wendeln, a Catholic nun with the Sisters of the Precious Blood religious order, has visited Hernandez regularly since her arrest.

“She is a lovely young lady who wants to get her GED,” said Wendeln, of Silverton. “She speaks English and wants to become a veterinarian. She is a hard worker and has held the same job for five years. She pays the same taxes as any other worker but receives no benefits from them.”

Wendeln is among the human rights activists who had committed to ensuring that Hernandez receives mental health treatment and complies with all ICE requirements if she is allowed to stay in the United States.

Nationally, 65 organizations and 4,000 individuals have signed petitions supporting the stay of removal for Hernandez. Her supporters are connecting her mental-health condition to the stress faced by another illegal immigrant, Joaquin Luna, 18, who shot and killed himself in his family’s Texas home Nov. 25 because he could not pursue his dream of becoming an architect or civil engineer in college.

Hernandez’s case has drawn attention from Los Angeles to New York.

Well we found out this was a lie. I suspect the sob story above is also untrue.

And who's SS# is she using to supposedly pay taxes?

Okay, she's been working in a factory for FIVE years... how much of these medical bills did she pay out of HER pocket?

No reason she shouldn't be deported, even under Obama's new policies. She is not eligible for the so-called Dream Act because she was not brought here by her parents, she's not pregnant, doesn't sound like she has family here depending on her, never attended school here. Heck, she couldn't have more than a ninth grade education since she entered here on her own when she was 13. Hmmm...... and she wants to become a veterinarian. Well, I want to be the King of England but that doesn't mean there is any chance of that happening. Last, but not least, I suspect the pencil jabs to the wrist had less to do with suicide than it did an attempt to use the system to her advantage.
