FLORENCE, Ariz. — Pinal County sheriff’s deputies say more than 4,500 rounds of ammunition have been found in the back of an SUV that was abandoned in the southern Arizona desert.

Sheriff Paul Babeu says investigators suspect the SUV was being used to smuggle the ammunition. He says the .38 caliber rounds found inside the vehicle are popular in Mexico.

The discovery followed a brief chase near Stanfield on Saturday. The Sheriff’s Office says a deputy patrolling the area spotted the vehicle and ran its plates.

The deputy tried to stop the SUV after finding out that it had been reported stolen in Phoenix. The driver fled into the desert.

Authorities were able to track the vehicle and found it abandoned. The ammunition was found stacked in boxes in the back.
