Arpaio critics protest in rain in front of Justice Dept.

Arpaio critics protest in rain in front of Justice Dept.

WASHINGTON -- Nearly 20 diehard critics of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio endured soaking rain here Monday to protest U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder's lack of federal legal action against the polarizing Arizona lawman.

Longtime anti-Arpaio activist Salvador Reza and others gathered on the sidewalk outside the Department of Justice, 950 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W. The demonstration was part of the Arizona Puente Human Rights Caravan. Members said they were in Washington for the weekend's big immigration-reform march and wanted to meet with Holder about Arpaio. Justice Department officials refused to meet with them, they said.

"They need to terminate his 287(g) (authority)," said Sylvia Herrera of Phoenix, referring to the federal regulation that allows local police to enforce U.S. immigration laws. Arpaio can do so only in the county jails, not on the streets. "But more than that, in the meantime, we need to have the federal government come in and take control of the jails and all the operations of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office until this investigation is complete."

The Justice Department has been looking into allegations that Arpaio's anti-crime sweep employ racial-profiling tactics. A separate investigation centers on allegations that Arpaio has abused his office by conducting harassing investigations into political rivals.

Reza said the Justice Department should put the Sheriff's Office into a federal receivership.

Despite the downpour, the protesters chanted call-and-response lines such as "Hey, hey, ho, ho/Joe Arpaio has to go" and "What do we want?/Arpaio out!/When do we want it?/Now!" and "Listen up, Department of Justice!/You're turning Maricopa into a land of injustice!" The demonstrators flashed signs reading "Eric Holder Indict Joe Arpaio," "Halt the Abuse of Power in Arizona" and "End Arpaio's Racial Profiling and Ethnic Cleansing."

Reached by telephone in Phoenix, Arpaio said he wasn't disturbed by Reza's D.C. protest, but would not be deterred by it, either. "He has the right to do that," Arpaio told AZ/DC, adding that he hopes Reza returns to Arizona soon because he misses him demonstrating outside his office building in downtown Phoenix.

Arpaio also detailed his recent countywide crime sweep on Thursday and Friday in which deputies made 111 arrests, 78 of which turned out to be illegal immigrants. The agency also made two significant drug seizures, he said.

"While he's out there protesting, I'm enforcing the law," Arpaio said of Reza.
