Sheriff Joe Arpaio is facing some deep budget cuts that will force him to change things at the sheriff's office.

Maricopa County budget officials plan to cut $4 million dollars from Arpaio's requested budget for fiscal 2009.

Governor Janet Napolitano stripped Arpaio of an additional $1.6 million in state funding used to pay for many of the sheriff's immigration-related operations.

Despite the cuts, Arpaio vows to continue with his immigration sweeps.

"The crime suppression operations have been very successful not just picking up illegal aliens but we cleared 50 warrants in a few hours," said Arpaio.

The sheriff hopes to save money by cutting back on services he provides to other agencies, reorganizing positions within the sheriff's office, and relying more on his volunteer posse members.

"When I talk about the posse, I talk about helping supplement deputies when we're out on an operation."

Arpaio is even taking donations. He said his office has received calls from people around Arizona and other states wanting to give money. Reportedly, one group in California representing 10,000 people want to donate. It's not known how much.

"It's very sad to have people call but we're going to accept the money and it will help somewhat."

Napolito is out to crush Sherrif Joe. I hope he stays the course. He has done nothing but good things for that state. I wish we had one like him in CA....

The whole Nation is backing the Sheriff . Good man , does his job . Arrest and Deport . Joe you got that job for life cause there is only 29,888,999 to go .

So Maricopa County has cut him to the tune of 4.6 million have they? Mary Rose Wilcox has her fingerprints all over this one, that's for damned sure.

That's okay though. This is not the first time the state and county has played games with Joe's funding to try and shut him down to appease certain people.

While right now the spotlight is on his illegal immigration efforts, Joe has always been controversial in his methods of dealing with crime and criminals because it has stepped on people's toes.

Inmates, used to doing time that was more like vacation, were horrified and offended when Joe changed things and forced them to actually do time instead of vacation. Their enabling loved ones wept, wailed, and became enraged that their "darlings" were <gasp> being treated like actual criminals and inmates. The ACLU and other groups were gnashing their teeth over "rights violations" such as no coffee or smokes, satellite tv and fully equipped gym/spa in deluxe, air conditioned comfort.

There was hue and cry when he began warrant sweeps and saturation patrols intended to round up those with warrants, dead beat parents and those driving drunk. A collective fit was thrown when his posse and deputies began patrolling malls during Christmas to protect shoppers from an ever increasing amount of crime against them.

How DARE this man do his job

The character assasination, false accusations, and funding cuts were instigated then just as they are being now and Mary Rose Wilcox was one of those with the biggest mouth leading the charge. But Joe went right ahead doing his job and they didn't succeed in shutting him down. Just like they won't succeed this time either.
