    4 suspects arrested in sting

    4 suspects arrested in sting

By LAURA B. MARTINEZ and MARK REAGAN/The Brownsville Herald

A Homeland Security Investigation has led to the arrests of four men accused of trying to distribute 10 pounds of cocaine, according to federal court documents.

Arturo Garcia Jr., Alejandro Hernandez Delgado, Sergio Sanchez and Jose Maria Cintora Aguilar all face one federal count of intent to distribute cocaine, federal court documents state.

Garcia was taken into custody Tuesday at the B&M International Bridge while trying to cross the cocaine into the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a press release. The others were apprehended around the Brownsville area.

Authorities with U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement confirmed the arrests are the result of an ongoing inves-tigation but declined to comment further. “We will pass on providing further information and allow the court record to speak for itself,” said Nina Pruneda, ICE spokeswoman, in a prepared statement.

Agents with the HSI conducted two “covert enforcement operations” Tuesday, with one of them occurring in the down-town area on East Van Buren Street. An additional operation happened at the 1400 block of International Boulevard.

Court documents reflect that investigators suspect the men were trying to deliver and sell the cocaine.

The documents state more than $7,000 was found in Sanchez’ possession at the time of his arrest—about $1,761 in his pant pockets and $6,000 inside a bag found in a vehicle Sanchez was driving.

The documents also state 4.58 kilograms of cocaine was also recovered.

The cocaine has an estimated value of $323,000, according to authorities.

The men appeared Wednesday before U.S. Magistrate Ronald G. Morgan on charges of possession with intent to distrib-ute approximately 4.58 kilograms of cocaine and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute approximately 4.58 kilo-grams of cocaine.

Bond was denied, and the men were turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, according to court records. A detention hearing for the group is scheduled for Oct. 1.
