ST THOMAS, USVI -- US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) marine interdiction agents early on Thursday seized $$580,917 from an abandoned vessel near Brewer’s Bay. Two individuals on board the vessel absconded.

Near 2 am, a CBP Midnight Express interceptor vessel crew approached a vessel with two persons on board as it moved toward Brewer's Bay. As the marine unit came near the vessel, it failed to heave to and fled, impacting the beach at a high rate of speed.

On impact the two individuals absconded and ran from the scene. The CBP agents inspected the vessel and discovered several duffle bags containing a large quantity of US currency currently estimated to be in the vicinity of $500,000.

CBP agents, in conjunction with the Virgin Islands Police Department SWAT team, conducted a thorough search of the area but were unable to locate the vessel’s occupants.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) received custody of the seized vessel and currency for further investigation.
