PHOENIX - U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona has announced he is a candidate for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 2012.

Flake made the announcement Monday in Phoenix at the same hotel where Republican Sen. Jon Kyl announced Thursday that he would not seek re-election.

Flake says his priorities include balancing the federal government's budget, securing the border and working on transportation and water policy issues.

Flake says broader action is needed on illegal immigration than just border security but that border security "needs to be the focus."

On the budget, Flake says everything needs to be on the table, including possible changes to Social Security. But he said changes shouldn't apply to current beneficiaries.

Flake has represented the 6th Congressional District in the Phoenix area since 2001.

Bipartisan Dream Act? Jeff Flake, Harry Reid are both onboard this nightmare
Liberal Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has announced he will add the DREAM Act, an amnesty measure benefiting illegal aliens, to an important defense policy bill the Senate will take up next week. The nightmarish DREAM is an acronym for Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act. The intent of the legislation if to provide college scholarships to children of illegal aliens, brought into the United States by their parents and meeting certain criteria.

This means the defense bill, which should be the recipient of bipartisan support, will be held hostage with two major partisan issues, since the repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tellâ€
