Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputies served a search warrant at a construction company in Glendale Thursday morning after an investigation suggested several employees used false identifications to secure employment.

United Construction Group at 6840 W. Frier Drive in Glendale employs 126 people, according to Jeff Sprong, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

About 16 of these employees are suspected of using fake identification to work there, according to Sprong.

GLENDALE, AZ - Deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office served a search warrant at a Glendale business Thursday morning looking for employees working in the U.S. illegally.

MCSO spokesman Jeff Sprong said the warrant was served at United Construction Group near Northern and 67th avenues where the company employs 126 workers.

Sprong said it is suspected that at least 16 employees are using fraudulent identification to work at the company.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said so far the company was cooperating.

"The manager is cooperative so this is going to help us identify the people and get through our investigation," he said.

Arpaio said 14 people were arrested for allegedly using false identification to work at the company and that two others who were applying for work there were taken into custody after admitting to being in the country illegally.

The latter two will not be charged but handed over to Border Patrol.
Arpaio said the raid was the result of a tip that several employees were bragging that they were in the country illegally.

He said this was the 67th workplace raid conducted by his department with nearly 700 arrests made.

Small construction companies continue to be major employers of illegals. A crackdown on the residential construction industry is long overdue.

17 arrested during MCSO raid at Glendale business

GLENDALE, Ariz. -Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies raided a business near 67th Avenue and Northern Thursday morning.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said his deputies received a tip from an employee at United Construction Group that several employees were suspected of being illegal and using fraudulent identification.

After a search of employment records, deputies found that construction company employed 126 workers, of which 16 were suspected of using false IDs.

17 arrests were made. The suspects' names were not released.

In a statement from MCSO's Jeff Sprong, he said, "In this investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) refused to arrest two illegal aliens that were looking for work while deputies were investigating the establishment."

Sprong adds that Arpaio refused to allow the suspected illegal aliens to be released into the streets and ordered deputies to transport them to the U.S. Border Patrol.
