Bellingham Robbery Briefly Leads To Border Crossing Problems
April 30, 2006
By KOMO Staff
BLAINE - A robbery in Bellingham led to some problems at the U.S.-Canadian border Saturday night after Canadian crossing guards walked off the job.
Guards at three crossings left their posts after word an armed robbery suspect was headed that way from Bellingham.
The guards are not armed, and are allowed to leave if they feel they are in danger.
Traffic at the border was backed up for a few hours Saturday night, but no other problems were reported and operations were back to normal Sunday morning.
This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Unarmed border agents walked off the job three times in just a few weeks earlier this year -- each time after a report of armed criminals headed that direction.
Canada's new prime minister Stephen Harper has proposed changing the law to allow agents to finally carry guns.Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at http://eepurl.com/cktGTn

Robbery, kidnapping suspects at large
Woman and baby safe
Kira Millage
The Bellingham Herald
A woman and a 4-month-child were safe late Saturday night after being kidnapped by two armed-robbery suspects as they were flee-ing the crime scene, said Lt. Craige Ambrose, with the Bellingham Police Department.
Two men described as Hispanic allegedly displayed handguns and robbed the Y Super Tienda El Polivoz, at 4120 Meridian St. around 9 p.m., according to police.
Law enforcement officials were still searching for the two suspects at 11:30 p.m. Saturday. They were last seen driving northbound on Meridian Street.
The northbound Canadian border crossings at the Peace Arch, Lynden and Pacific Highway were closed Saturday night. Canadian border guards left their posts after hearing armed robbery suspects might be approaching, according to the Asso-ciated Press.
During the robbery, a customer approached the store, leaving his wife and baby in his black ’96 Chev-rolet Camaro, Ambrose said. As the robbery suspects fled the store, one stole the Camaro, keeping the woman and baby inside, Ambrose said. The other suspect drove away in a white compact car, possibly a Honda, according to police.
The woman and baby were found by Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office officials in the Everson area after being dropped off, according to police. The identities were not re-leased late Saturday night, but no injuries were reported.
Both suspects and vehicles were at large late Saturday night. Police are asking anyone with information on the location of the stolen Camaro, license plate 104 RHA, to please call 911.
