Border agent says illegal border crossings up after news report

UNDATED - It's best known for its fishing, but now Minnesota's remote Northwest Angle on Lake of the Woods has gained a reputation as a place to try slip into the United States illegally.

The chief patrol agent for the Grand Forks district -- Glen Schroeder (SHROH'-der) -- says the area has been shown on C-N-N as an easy entry point into the United States. He thinks people picked up on that.

Schroeder has no numbers, but he says authorities had two cases of illegal border crossings in the past week alone. He says some of those arrested have said they got the idea of trying to cross there from the C-N-N report.

The angle is very remote, and the only way to enter this country is across Lakes of the Woods.

Schroeder says a new patrol boat -- large enough to be on the big lake even in bad weather --has helped catch many of those trying to make the crossing.
