TUCSON - Southern Arizona Border Patrol agents have had to deal with an uptick in assaults, and apprehending drug traffickers, sex offenders and human smugglers as the weather has cooled down.

Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents were assaulted during separate incidents just hours apart, authorities said.

Agents assigned to the Special Operations Detachment, working in a remote area west of Tucson late Sept. 28, encountered two Mexican nationals armed with rifles. While attempting to arrest the individuals, one subject ran. When an agent caught up with the subject, an altercation ensued and a second agent had to assist in subduing the subject. One agent suffered a dislocated shoulder during the altercation. Agents also seized four weapons during the encounter.

A few hours later, Douglas Border Patrol Station agents encountered two Mexican nationals illegally present in the U.S. As agents were arresting the subjects, one refused to comply and punched an agent in the throat and torso before being subdued.

The individuals carrying firearms were turned over to Homeland Security Investigations and face prosecution.

The individuals arrested by Douglas agents will also face prosecution.

On Sept. 24, officers arrested a 25-year-old Sahuarita, Arizona woman and a 17-year-old Mexican man involved in separate attempts to smuggle approximately $104,000 worth of methamphetamine through the Port of Nogales.

Agents at the Interstate 19 checkpoint discovered multiple subjects concealed in the trunks of vehicles during separate incidents.

Two U.S. citizens were arrested Oct. 3 for attempting to smuggle two Mexican nationals and one Peruvian national. Oct. 4, agents arrested a U.S. citizen for attempting to smuggle two adult Mexican nationals.

Agents working at the State Route 82 checkpoint Oct. 5 arrested a U.S. citizen for attempting to smuggle three adult Mexican nationals in a trunk.

Nogales Station agents apprehended a male Honduran national Oct. 2. A records check revealed a 2010 conviction and 8-month prison sentence in California for committing a “lewd or lascivious act with a child under 14”. Monday, agents arrested a male Mexican national who had served 60 days in 2008 on a misdemeanor charge in New York City for forcibly touching another person’s “sexual/intimate” parts.

On Oct. 3, officers arrested a 36-year-old Nogales, Arizona man after finding $55,000 worth of methamphetamine – approximately 18 pounds – in the rocker panels of his Honda sedan at the Dennis DeConcini crossing in Nogales.

Officers seized the drugs and vehicle, and turned the subject over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.

Officers working at the Mariposa crossing with a CBP narcotics-detection canine apprehended a woman Oct. 5 after finding more than 33 pounds of meth, valued at almost $100,000, in the floor of her Chevy sedan.

On Oct. 4, officers working at the Dennis DeConcini pedestrian crossing selected a Mexican teen for additional questioning and found almost 1.5 pounds of meth, worth close to $4,400, concealed within the groin area of his clothing.
