Border Patrol agents apprehend illegal aliens

EDEN -- At least a dozen illegal immigrants traveling in a Ford Expedition were tracked and followed Tuesday along Interstate 84 to a private driveway just off the interstate in Eden.

After stopping, the vehicle's doors swung open and a swarm of bodies took off running across the residential neighborhood.

"They go where they can scatter best," said Chuck Albrecht, assistant chief of the Havre Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol. "They can go jumping over fences."

Pulling into a residential neighborhood was their best bet once they realized they were being followed by a marked Border Patrol vehicle, noted Albrecht.

The several-hour pursuit that began at 1200 E Road resulted in the apprehension of seven Mexicans that had apparently crossed illegally into the United States. Albrecht guessed there was about an equal number that managed to evade authorities, including the driver.

"Initially, there was a lot of running," said Albrecht of the foot chase. "Most border patrol work is actually very fun, like playing football or hockey. It's important to stay in shape," he said.

At noon on Tuesday, Border Patrol agents spotted the vehicle traveling west on I-84. The Explorer with Arizona plates was seen stranded east of Eden along I-84 earlier that morning, surrounded by an estimated 15 people. That information ultimately led to the chase and apprehension of about half of those being pursued.

After they were arrested, BP agents interrogated them to determine whether they were legally permitted in the country. It was determined that they were all illegal.

"With Mexicans, it's almost always voluntary return," said Albrecht.

It proved true in this case.

Border Patrol agents found none of the aliens were felons. However, one had a misdemeanor. Another had a prior deportation on his record. They were flown Thursday to San Diego, to be released back across the border.

Seems like a waste of time, huh?
