Border Patrol Agents Get Lesson In Childbirth
We’ve all heard the stories of women giving birth in the oddest places, such as taxicabs, in airplanes, or even in restaurants.
But some women are becoming moms in the harshest of environments -- the U.S.-Mexico border.
There are students learning proper baby-birthing techniques, but they are not expectant parents or even nurses in residency.
“Babies are born all over the world outside the hospital,” said Irene Carr, of Scripps La Jolla.
The students are San Diego agents with the U.S. Border Patrol.
“What they want to know is what do I need to know to give a safe delivery,” said Carr
The course is being taught at Scripps Hospital La Jolla and is preparing the agents for emergency childbirth.
“It's a very exciting event, a very charged event. If this were to happen, it's something that we want to give the best training we can possibly give to them,” said one Border Patrol agent.
The three-week course teaches agents to recognize an impending birth and how to deliver a baby and deal with the unexpected.
“Mother Nature makes it be very easy but sometimes there are complications and that's what they need to know,” said Terri Cobo, of Scripps La Jolla.
In the classroom, it is a mannequin.
But soon the agents will head into the maternity ward for some extracurricular experience.
“They can observe the birth, which will add greatly to this class,” said Carr.
Although the Border Patrol did not have specific numbers on hand, they said border births do occur and they want to be prepared.
“It does add to our arsenal to protect everybody out there in the community. That's our biggest focus right now,” said one Border Patrol agent.
There is a political angle that Scripps wishes to stay away from.
In many cases, Mexican moms-to-be will cross the border pregnant in hopes of giving birth in the U.S.
The child born would then be considered a U.S. citizen under the Constitution.Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at http://eepurl.com/cktGTn

The 1st lesson should be on "how to roll a pregnant woman over to her side of the border".
