EDINBURG - U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Rio Grande Valley Sector helped save the lives of six people. The rescues started Thursday.

Personnel on a CBP helicopter spotted several people struggling to swim across the Rio Grande near Abram. They notified Border Patrol Border Patrol agents, who then rescued five people.

Another man was rescued near Brownsville Saturday. Border Patrol agents found him, after getting a call about a missing person. The man was taken to a Brownsville hospital, where he was admitted for kidney failure.

The total number of people agents have saved this year is nearly 280.
This year, they've also recovered the remains of about 120 people. The remains of two people were found within the same time as the six rescues this past week.

Border Patrol agents said many illegal immigrants smuggled into the U.S. are unaware of the extreme danger they face with respect to brutal environmental conditions.
