Border Patrol agents arrested a Mexican sex offender Thursday near Hidalgo.

Agents detained 44-year-old Isidro Montalvo-Torres and requested a records check, according to the federal criminal complaint against him.

"The defendant claims to have illegally entered the United States on Oct. 22, 2015, near Hidalgo, Texas," according to the criminal complaint. "Records checks revealed the defendant was formally deported/excluded from the United States on July 10, 2015, through Laredo, Texas."

Montalvo was convicted of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety sex offender registry. In July 2009, he was sentenced to eight years in state prison and later deported.

Court records don't list an attorney for Montalvo, who remains in federal custody.
