A 30-year-old Guatemalan man has been sentenced to two years in prison for trying to illegally re-enter the U.S. on May 12, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Allan Yair Najera-Valenti was convicted a pair of times in Phoenix. The first was in 1998 for unlawful possession of a firearm which landed him a 15-month prison sentence. Then in 2009, he was arrested for misconduct involving a weapon and sentenced 18 months.

CBP said Najera-Valenti will be removed from the U.S. after his incarceration.

It is about time they started stopping and incarcerating illegals for reentery.

Thing is that I doubt they would have imprisoned this guy if he had not already been jailed for additional crimes twice.

Illegal re-entry is the top federal criminal charge

Illegal re-entry into the United States accounted for nearly one-quarter of all federal prosecutions and almost half of all immigration prosecutions in the first half of the year, making it the top federal criminal charge, according to Justice Department data . . .

Illegal entry, when an individual is caught for the first time entering the U.S. illegally, is the second most common immigration crime and is considered a misdemeanor, which averages a sentence of one month in custody, according to the report . . .
